11 am WILDLIFE PROGRAM: Behind the Scenes with the Ijams Veterinarian
(Ages 5 and up) Get up close and personal with some of Ijams' furred and feathered animal ambassadors! You won't want to miss this unique opportunity to go behind the scenes of our animal care program. You'll get to see how we feed and care for the animals, and you may even have the chance to get nose-to-beak or toe-to-tail with some of our wildlife friends. Due to liability concerns, participants cannot be under 5 years of age. Children under the age of 14 must be accompanied by a paying adult. 9 am - 5:30 pm CHILDREN'S PROGRAM: Youth Photo Camp
(Ages 8-18) This terrific camp includes all day "hands-on" instruction from award-winning professional photographers and a Certified Scout Merit Badge Instructor. Participants will also receive lunch, a photo nature walk at Ijams, and even the opportunity to photograph some of our animal ambassadors! There will also be a print competition with awards and camp souvenir items! Spaces are limited and pre-registration is required. 1 pm FAMILY PROGRAM: Ijams Children's Story Time
Join Ijams volunteer Lynn Keffer as she reads one A Boy Wants A Dinosaur by Hiawyn Oram and Satoshi Kitamura, first published in 2006. In this case, the dinosaur is a Massospondylus! Join us for this terrific new program at Ijams Nature Center! Look for the Nature Fun Station sign to find a fun outdoor learning activity. Whether, we are catching bugs in the meadow or planting flowers in the garden, visitors can join us for a variety of outdoor discoveries. Follow the sign to fun! FREE. No registration required.
8:30 pm FAMILY PROGRAM: Bat Night
Is the end of summer making you batty? Then join us for Bat Night and shake your before-school blues! We'll learn a little about these flying mammals, learn how to hear like one, and then go see if we can find some in the park. The fee for this program is $5 for members and $8 for non-members. Join us for this great outdoor family program! Designed with family fun and exploration in mind, these programs are designed for families to attend together, enjoying nature and spending quality time together. This month we'll explore all the interesting sites and sounds that Ijams has to offer... you never know what is just around the bend in the trail. After a morning of hands-on activities, we'll enjoy a boxed lunch on the back terrace. The fee for this program is $15 per person for Ijams members; $20 for non-members. 10 am ADULT PROGRAM: Owls and Woodpeckers of Tennessee
(Ages 12 and up) Join naturalist Stephen Lyn Bales for a look at the life histories of the owls and woodpeckers that live in Tennessee, everything from the secretive saw-whet owl of the Smokies to the now statewide extinct red-cockaded woodpecker of old pine forests. You can also learn the secrets of the exhibit hall with our museum curator every Sunday at 3 pm to peek into the world of the Ijams exhibits. Both of these programs are free to members, $2 for non-members. No registration required.
East Tennessee Historical Society Brown Bag Series: McGhee Tyson Airport After 75 Years

“Knoxville’s Gateway to the World – McGhee Tyson Airport after 75 Years” Brown Bag Lecture by Bob Davis
Knoxville is the 130th largest city in the United States yet has an airport similar in size to those located in much larger cities such as the twelfth largest city of Indianapolis or Austin, the fourteenth largest.
In honor of the 75th anniversary of the McGhee Tyson Airport, the East Tennessee Historical Society and the McGhee Tyson Airport will present a program by Bob Davis to look at the history of airport’s establishment, the role it has played in regional growth through the years, and the important cooperation between civil aviation, general aviation, and the military. He will also highlight some of the aircraft and important visitors that have been in Knoxville over the past half century, as well as a display of models of aircraft that landed at Tyson McGhee.

Arts & Culture Alliance: “Battle of the Mediums: Oil versus Water” by Steve Black and Betty Bullen

The Arts & Culture Alliance is pleased to present a new exhibition of watercolors and oils by local artists Steve Black and Betty Bullen. The exhibition will be displayed in the Balcony at the Emporium Center in downtown Knoxville from August 3-31, 2012, and an opening reception will take place as part of First Friday activities on August 3 from 5:00-9:00 PM. Black and Bullen met through the Tennessee Artist’s Association, and while they have known each other for only for a few years, they have chaired exhibitions and worked on many projects together. “Oil versus Water” is their first exhibition together.

The Arts & Culture Alliance is pleased to present a new exhibition by the Townsend Artisan Guild (TAG) entitled “Destination Townsend”, featuring original paintings, photographs, mixed media, sculptures, jewelry, and more by nearly 30 local artists. The exhibition will be displayed at the Emporium Center in downtown Knoxville from August 3-31, 2012, and an opening reception will take place as part of First Friday activities on August 3 from 5:00-9:00 PM.

UT Downtown Gallery: Figurative Works on Paper

The UT Downtown Gallery is excited to present an upcoming exhibition from the Permanent Collection of the Ewing Gallery of Art and Architecture. August’s exhibition will feature figurative works on paper, including watercolors, drawings, photography, and printmaking. Notable works include: portraits by Chuck Close and Alice Neel, prints by Francisco Goya, Leon Golub, Kathe Kollwitz, Keith Haring, Luis Jiminez, and William Hogarth, and photography by Helmut Newton and Walker Evans. Also in the exhibition will be works from the UT School of Art professors, students, and visiting artists, past and present. These artists are, Baldwin Lee, Don Kurka, F. Clark Stewart, Ruth Weisberg, Eleanor Dickinson, Mark Steinmetz, Ruth Weisberg and Joseph Delaney.
Works will be on display August 3 - August 18, 2012, Wednesday through Friday 11am - 6pm and Saturdays 10am -3pm.

Art Market Gallery: Recent Works by Patricia Herzog and Francie Entz

August 1-September 2, Art Market Galley of Knoxville is pleased to present an exhibit of recent works by Patricia Herzog of Knoxville and Francie Entz of Loudon.
Patricia Herzog, who holds a MS degree in ceramics from UT, will be exhibiting a collection of her recent clay works, some of which include fused-glass elements. She enjoys experimenting with colorful glazes and textures with an emphasis on whimsical animal imagery and the natural environment. Patricia is a member of several regional craft guilds and has been a studio potter since 1978.
Painter Francie Entz will be exhibiting a collection of her recent works in water media. She says that for her “the process of painting--the journey--is the important thing.” Francie aspires to create work that intrigues, captivates, puzzles and that also pleases both herself and the viewer. Member of both the Knoxville and Tennessee Watercolor Societies, her works have been juried into exhibits throughout the US.
A First Friday Reception for the exhibit is planned for August 3 from 5:30-9 pm with complimentary refreshments and live folk-style music performed by Molly Rochelson.
