Fun for the whole family, children welcome! Join Smoky Mountain Storytellers at Vienna Coffee House, 212 College St, Maryville, TN. Performers Millie Sieber and Sheri Liles entertain with humor and fun tales.
Millie Sieber’s storytelling fascinates both adults and children. Listeners of all ages, from Catoosa County, Georgia to Rochester, New York, in Denmark and in Sweden, respond to her tales with laughter, insights and sometimes–shivers. Whether humorous stories, scary tales, personal narratives, folktales, or stories based on oral history–her listeners say, "Millie Sieber makes stories come alive!"

SHERI LILES’ career as a professional storyteller began as a teacher/naturalist at the Great Smoky Mountains Institute at Tremont. Storytelling became a part of nights around the campfire. Her interest in Native American legends and Appalachian folk tales have shaped stories she likes to tell. She’s even written a few of her own. She has degrees in both English and Nursing. Sheri and her husband now operate an organic farm. They host school groups to teach about sustainable food and energy production.

The Town of Farragut Arts Council presents Mary Agnes Schaefer as the featured artist for July and August. Located at the Farragut Town Hall, her exhibit features quilt squares painted on canvas.

Schaefer's featured painted quilt squares are smaller in size and suitable to be hung inside. Typical quilt squares are not fabric but are quilt square images painted on prepared surfaces to be hung outside on sides of buildings, business establishments, barns, homes. They also appear on routes through communities to be seen from highways or back roads. Quilt square trails is a movement across the United States and includes one in Tennessee called the Appalachian Quilt Square Trail (www.vacationaqt.com). The quilt squares on this trail represent patterns that were used in quilts pieced by our ancestors as well as modern day designs. Some of these quilt squares are quite large and can be seen from a great distance. Schaefer hopes to encourage the creation of a Farragut Quilt Square Trail in our community.

Our exhibit features the work of quilters Melissa Everett and Emily Doane. Melissa describes her quilting in this way: "I started quilting in 2011, after my first son was born. I wanted to make him something he could have forever. The obsession just snowballed from there. In 2012, I opened my Etsy shop, Cycling Jane's Closet, and through it met Emily Doane. Emily, whose work is also featured in this exhibition, invited me to a Knoxville Modern Quilt Guild meeting. That meeting, i joined the guild. I have continued to be an active member and in 2014 became the president. I've enjoyed the creativity, inspiration and education I've gained from the other members. My work is somewhat all over the map. I love trying new techniques, taking classes and learning how others approach the craft. I am a self-taught quilter, learning the craft form other bloggers. My grandmothers were seamstresses and made clothing, but only a great-grandmother, whom I never met, was a quilter. It has been such a healthy outlet for me while staying at home to raise my two boys. This is my first solo exhibition and you can see my growth and exploration of styles throughout the pieces showcased."

The Shelby Cobra replica was 3D-printed at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. After being unveiled by President Obama and Vice President Biden in January 2015, the Cobra traveled the U.S. and was exhibited in Europe. The Cobra will be on display at AMSE through July except for its expected appearance Monday, July 4, in the Farragut Independence Day Parade. Researchers printed the Shelby Cobra at DOE’s Manufacturing Demonstration Facility at ORNL using the Big Area Additive Manufacturing (BAAM) machine, which can manufacture strong, lightweight composite parts without the need for tooling.

The Townsend Artisan Guild will present the works of its artists depicting the theme “A Sense of Community: Portrait of Small Towns and City Life”. Fiber artists, painters, photographers, sculptors, and woodworkers will exhibit their representation of communities and the environments they consider home. Each individual values different aspects of community life and the surroundings that make each community unique, and each artist presents his own unique interpretation. The Guild, founded in 2007, brings working fine artists and fine crafts persons from East Tennessee together to promote education, exploration, awareness, and development of the arts. The group, through the individual participation of its members, strives to promote community interest in and appreciation of the arts through participation in events, demonstrations, classes, festivals, and workshops. The Guild operates a gallery and exhibit space at 7719 E. Lamar Alexander Parkway in Townsend for its members to display their work and increase their understanding of the business of selling their artwork. Ty Crisp grew up fly fishing and collecting Native American artifacts with his father throughout southern Appalachia. As a third generation carpenter, his career began at an early age, from working in his grandfather’s shop to assisting his father in the field. Choosing travel over college in 1993, he spent the next two years exploring the diverse American landscape before resuming his craft. In 1995 he returned to Tennessee and traveled around the southeast constructing timber frame and log homes. In 1997 he moved to Charleston, SC where he maintained and restored historical downtown homes. Once again returning to Tennessee he dedicated himself to mastering cabinetry and finish carpentry. His love of woodworking quickly evolved into furniture making, joinery and design. Upon opening his first Studio in 2004 he began experimenting in metal work, concrete and stone. This combination of elements became a catalyst for interior and exterior design concepts. “Stirred by remnants found in barns, factories or abandoned in fields, I approach this work as an archeology of sorts; a gathering of essence, as I see it, excavating artifacts forged by industry, agriculture, use and decay,” says Ty Crisp. “I have a deep reverence for the beauty and authenticity that ripens from years of service, exposure to the elements, and the passing of time. I am drawn to the patina, sense of place, and the story evident in these objects. This is an introduction to a style of work and a process inspired by the music and mythology of Appalachia. I combine elements from farms, attics, sawmills and sheds throughout Tennessee to form sculpture, furniture, décor, and lighting.” www.reelfootstudio.com

Renee Suich creates mixed media art including collages inspired by nature, history and the energy that surrounds us all. Early years spent in design were further fostered by time spent working at the Cleveland Museum of Art. Her work has been referred to as ‘Heritage Collage’, as she incorporates vintage imagery in a contemporary composition. “My vision starts with a story that I want to share,” says Suich. “I then use layers of my own artist made altered paper, natural objects, and painting.” Suich now resides in East Tennessee and enjoys experimenting with new media including encaustic work. Different mediums, like encaustic work, allow Suich to explore color and texture in a new way. Every piece becomes a new challenge. Suich recently received 3rd place in Small Plates: A Response to Hunger by Art&ArtDeadlines.com, and she was also accepted as a finalist to show work in the September issue of ClothPaperScissors magazine. www.reneesuich.com
