"My recent collage work incorporates my peppered paper, large sheets of paper that originally provided a surface to catch all of the spills, splatters, and brush strokes as I painted. Pioneer House, home of the original Knoxville Girl t-shirt and letterpress printmaking studio and gallery, will throw open the doors Nov. 3 to welcome five local artists. The Knoxville Girls show and sale brings together five fine women with ties to Knoxville and a flair for fiber, ceramics, letterpress printmaking, encaustic painting and mixed media. You'll love them better than biscuits.

The artists:
Knoxville native Amanda Humphreys occupies her time teaching pottery classes and making functional, whimsical pottery. Her work is inspired by her love of textures and colors borrowed from old, historic buildings, vintage maps and the 80s and 90s in general. She also revels in classic country music.

Peg Hambright is a former graphic designer and illustrator who has neglected her creative side for the past 25 years while nurturing her little bakery, Magpies. In an attempt to find balance in her life, she's found herself transitioning from food into art by making art that is food. It's a start.

A mixed media artist from Knoxville, Cara Pfennigwerth loves to draw, crochet, garden and try just about anything hands-on. Another favorite art form is relief block print. She draws most of her inspiration from the flora and fauna of East Tennessee and creates as a way to preserve and appreciate the beauty of local wildlife.

Laura Baisden runs a custom letterpress shop called Camp Nevernice in the same historical building that is home to Pioneer House. She crafts custom posters and invitations for clients and hand-carves linoleum illustrations. She has a labor of love in the works: writing and illustrating a children's book.

Julie Belcher is the proprietor of Pioneer House. An Appalachian artist, dedicated handmade advocate and restorer of vintage printing presses from way back, she adds bits of her Southern and mountain heritage to all her works. Letterpress monoprints and small encaustic mixed media are among the new works she has created for this show.

Recent works by Marie Merritt and Nelson Ziegler will be on display at the Art Market Gallery. An opening reception for the featured artists will begin at 5:30 p.m., Nov 3rd, during Downtown Knoxville’s monthly First Friday Art Walk, with complimentary refreshments.

Marie Merritt shares her experience from hiking all the trails in the Great Smoky Mountains through her art. Interpreting the scenic vistas, babbling streams, lovely flora, and majestic animals she has encountered in her signature style of oil painting, she strives to give the viewer the feeling of awe that she has enjoyed. She develops a quality of depth and dimension in her paintings that is sensitive and expressive by using traditional time honored techniques of multiple layers of oil paints and glazes. Marie, a native of East Tennessee, has received numerous awards, designations and recognitions with her art, including Certified Decorative Artist and Teacher of Decorative Arts. Her original works hang in private and corporate collections throughout the region and her art has been featured on book covers and in magazines. Nelson Ziegler, of Sevierville, Tennessee in the Smoky Mountains, is a graduate of The Art Institute of Boston and Northwestern Academy of Watercolor. He has won many awards for both his painting and woodturning, both regionally and nationally. Among them, Gold Medal for watercolor at the American Artists Professional League, Honorable Mention-The Artist’s Magazine annual competition. He was chosen the Spring Wildflower Pilgrimage artist of the year in 2016. He has participated in numerous juried exhibitions in New York including Allied Artists, American Artists Professional League, Salmagundi Club, Knickerbocker Artists, National Arts Club, Hudson Valley Arts Association, as well as Adirondack National Watercolor Exhibition, Faces of America (a national watercolor portrait show), Academic Artists Association, Springfield Arts League, Springfield, MA, Guild of Boston Artists, Copley Society, Boston, MA, North Shore Arts Association, Gloucester, MA, Tennessee Watercolor Society and Arrowmont School of Arts & Crafts. A member of the National Watercolor Society, New England Watercolor Society, The Oil Painters of America and the Northshore Art Association and the American Association of Woodturners. Sunny sidewalks, a shifting forest shadow, the daylight as it recedes into evening. Scenes of passerby, the twilit facade of a building- what could have gone unnoticed can be transformed by renewed attention to light and shadow, and what was one happenstance begins to feel like home. Recent Works gives a chance to revel in the present moment, caught in sparkling reflections and deep shadows, and offered to us through the attentive eyes of a longtime Knoxville native.

Live and Local: Recent Works of the Pellissippi Art Faculty in the Balcony gallery

Live and Local features a mix of ceramics, sculpture, installation, printmaking, drawing, painting, and mixed media. After a successful exhibition in 2012, the studio art faculty of Pellissippi State Community College return to the Emporium to exhibit their recent works. Among the faculty, exhibiting artists include: Randy Arnold, Jennifer Brickey, Caroline Covington, Marty Komorny, Elizabeth Kurtz, Jeff Lockett, Tatiana Potts, Herb Rieth, and Sarah Shebaro.

Kimberly Pack: lovenestmonsters in the display case
The drawings of Kimberly Pack came about out of necessity. Tough times call for some unusual ways of escaping. Her drawings of mopey-faced, scraggly-haired guys became an outlet for that escape. To create guys with lumpy bodies and eyes with dark circles and puffiness allowed her to bring to life with pen and paper the sadness and uncertainty of her life.

Pack was born in Virginia to a family of people with sleepy, sorrowful eyes whom even in the toughest of times were always there for her. The drawings possibly represent the small town she was born in – surrounded by mountains and home to a Dupont factory located across the street from her childhood home. There were plenty of characters in that town and in her own family, many of whom come through in the drawings she creates. A graduate of the University of Tennessee with a BA in art and a concentration in photography, the black and white-ness of her drawings only confirms her love of the processing and printing of black and white film. The Cape Ann Collection - Watercolors by Carl Whitten on the North Wall
Cape Ann sits jutting out into the sea 25 miles north of Boston, Massachusetts. For over 150 years, famous artists have been coming to Cape Ann's quaint and rustic towns of Gloucester, Rockport, Annisquam, Magnolia, Lanesville, and Essex to paint its beauty. “You can never run out of things to paint with Cape Ann's six lighthouses, fishing boats, sandy beaches and rocky shores,” says Carl Whitten. “I was truly inspired by the natural seaside light, colors and flavor of Cape Ann.” The summer he visited was like a homecoming since he was born on Cape Ann and can track his family ancestry to fishermen from Gloucester. Other than a few summer visits, Whitten had not lived on Cape Ann since early childhood, but now as an artist can appreciate its beauty and great history.

Carl Whitten currently lives in Knoxville. He has received numerous awards for his paintings. His paintings have exhibited in the Emporium Center, McGee Tyson Airport, Dogwood Regional Fine Arts exhibits, and in the Knoxville Mayors' offices. He is a member of the American Watercolor Society, The Tennessee Artists Association, and the Arts & Culture Alliance of Knoxville. The Knoxville Community Darkroom in the Atrium
This show represents work from the board members of The Knoxville Community Darkroom and includes a combination of traditional analog, digital and alternative photographic processes. KCD is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, offering darkroom space for those who want to develop film and print in a traditional black and white darkroom. Education is a top priority, and KCD offers classes in film development and printing in addition to alternative processes. They also offer classes designed for high school and middle school students. Their space provides a great opportunity for all photographers in the area to come together. Tennessee Stage Company's eighth Timeless Works benefit production of Phillip Barry’s classic comedy, The Philadelphia Story at the Historic Southern Railway Station, 300 West Depot Avenue.

The Tennessee Stage Company, known to Knoxville audiences for Shakespeare On The Square and the New Play Festival returns to our Timeless Works series this autumn with the Phillip Barry’s classic comedy, The Philadelphia Story, a romantic comedy about a society wedding gone hilariously wrong in the hours leading up to the event.

The Philadelphia Story is a collaboration with the Historic Southern Railway Station, operated as an event space by Blueslip Winery. This beautiful structure makes a perfect backdrop for the simplicity and whimsy of our Timeless Works productions.

Timeless Works was conceived by the Stage Company as a benefit series to help raise funds for our other programs: Shakespeare On The Square, the New Play Festival and our Education and Outreach programs. All the artists donate their time and talents and all funds raised go directly back into the work of the Company.

McClung Museum Store will proudly partner with the U.S Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program as a Toy Drop-Off site this holiday season. From November 1–30, university and local community members are encouraged to help a child in need by donating a new, unwrapped gift for children up to 14 years old, or purchasing a new toy from the Museum Store for donation.

The Museum Store will also have appropriate gifts for purchase for Toys for Tots, including games, stuffed animals, stocking stuffers, kids’ books, adult coloring books and pencils, jewelry, and more.
