Gallery 1010 is a contemporary art exhibition space located at 100 S. Gay Street in Suite 114 of the Emporium Center of downtown Knoxville, Tennessee. As one of three University of Tennessee School of Art galleries, Gallery 1010 is the only fully student-run, non-profit, off-campus exhibition space in the state of Tennessee. The mission of Gallery 1010 is to provide space for the School of Art students of the University of Tennessee to experiment and develop new ideas while gaining educational gallery experience in professional standards and practices.

Ijams welcomes Donna Moore's Night Blooming Cereus showcase to the Hallway Gallery this month.

Moore says her work is often an exploration of reality distorted by time and memory. For this series, she used a flatbed scanner and an enlarger as her camera, and made cyanotypes and lumen prints using the sun and the passage of time to create original prints. Don't miss it!

The Smithsonian’s National Collection of Fishes X-rays represent more than 70 percent of the world’s fish specimens and is the largest and most diverse collection of its kind in the world. Although the X-rays featured in the national collection were made for research purposes, the strikingly elegant images demonstrate the natural union of science and art and are a visual retelling of the evolution of fish. X-Ray Vision: Fish Inside Out, an exhibition from the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History and the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service (SITES), showcases these dramatic prints exposing the inner workings of the fish.

The exhibition features 32 black-and-white digital prints of different species of fish. Arranged in evolutionary sequence, these X-rays give a tour through the long stream of fish evolution. The X-rays have allowed Smithsonian and other scientists to study the skeleton of a fish without altering the specimen, making it easier for scientists to build a comprehensive picture of fish diversity.

The exhibition also includes specimens from the collections of the McClung Museum, the Etnier Ichthyological Collection, and the Vertebrate Osteology Collection to highlight research happening with fish specimens at the University of Tennessee.

As part of the Clarence Brown Theatre’s production of Inherit the Wind, the Hokes Archives presents the Association for Creative Zoology, a fictive creationist organization from the 1920s. Included are lithographs and taxidermy that present unusual hybrid animals, and a QR code with a short video presentation about Reverend James Randolph Denton, claimed to be the founder of the Association. The display also depicts the Taurus crockettensis, a bull-raccoon that inhabited Tennessee before the Great Global Flood. The project has been presented previously at the Scopes Trial Festival held in Dayton, Tennessee, and at the American Philosophical Society in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

The exhibit was created by Beauvais Lyons, a Chancellor’s Professor of Art and Divisional Dean for Arts and Humanities in UT’s College of Arts and Sciences known or his works of academic parody.

Amadeus Concert Ensemble Presents Beethoven and Strauss
Amadeus Concert Ensemble is delighted to mount an exhibition celebrating composers being featured on its upcoming concerts at the Cathedral of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus:

+ “The Golden Age of Strauss” on Sunday, March 9 at 5:30 PM

The exhibition includes photographs, music, programs, and memorabilia from the collection of conductor Brian Salesky about composers Ludwig van Beethoven, Richard Strauss, Johann Strauss Sr. & Jr., and Oscar Straus.

Carrying a penny in your pocket into the new year is alleged to bring good fortune and prosperity. Juried by artist, Rachel Garceau, this exhibition explores interpretations of superstition. Held in two parts, Part II will be open to the public on First Friday, February 7th from 5:00-9:00pm, with a special exhibition walk through with Rachel Garceau and selected artists at 5:00.

All of us have an inner voice. For artists, that voice constantly whispers “create”, and one of the best ways to ignite the creative spark is through collaboration. In this spirit of camaraderie and creativity, three artists come together as “Three Dames” to exhibit their work: Linda Blair, Cheryl Massey (Cherdo) and Marcia Shelly (Maru) showcase their talents across various media, including watercolor, acrylic, pastel, and ink.

Dame Linda Blair shares this about their unique partnership, “We created Three Dames a few years ago to enjoy the advantages of exhibiting collectively. We each lean towards watermedia, which naturally allows our work to be a cohesive display.”

Dame Cheryl Massey (Cherdo) is a self-taught artist driven by an unwavering passion for art, creativity, and a dedicated commitment to lifelong learning. Whether actively engaged in creating art, exploring diverse artistic mediums, or drawing inspiration from a myriad of sources, her love for creativity establishes a profound connection with the artistic world. Dame Marcia Shelly, recognized by the signature “Maru”, specializes in vibrant colorful paintings that have captured the attention of admirers throughout the U.S. and internationally. Aad Berlijn's inspiration comes from memories, experiences, and observations of everyday reality, which he zooms in on until an internalized image emerges. The drawings encourage fantasy and association.

Aad Berlijn (1948) lives alternately in Amsterdam and Knoxville. He has created paintings and drawings for over 40 years. In Amsterdam, Berlijn enjoys the social life and paints in his studio. In the quieter American city of Knoxville, he focuses on sketches and drawings. A storyteller at heart, he draws inspiration from the art world and his personal experiences, which results in accessible works of art with clear painting principles. His paintings often feature depth and a blend of abstract and figurative elements. His work is included in the collections of the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam and the Cultural Heritage Agency of the Netherlands.

The Arts & Culture Alliance’s 19th annual National Juried Exhibition features selected works from 36 artists throughout the region. The National Juried Exhibition was developed to provide a forum for artists to compete on a regional scale and display their highest quality work. The exhibition encompasses all styles and genres from both emerging and established artists working in a variety of media such as wood, photography, oil, glass, fiber, paper and more. Over $1,800 in cash awards will be announced at a brief awards ceremony at 5:30 PM on February 7 with remarks from the juror, Jessica Wohl.

About the juror: Jessica Wohl is Associate Professor and Chair of Art, Art History and Visual Studies at Sewanee.
