Athens Area Council for the Arts: Daddy Mack Blues Bank

  • January 15, 2016
  • 7:30PM

Category: Music

The Athens Area Council for the Arts presents Daddy Mack Blues Band, authentic Memphis blues. Daddy Mack is the next installment of the 2015-2016 Black Box Concert Series that takes place at The Arts Center at 320 North White Street, Athens, Tennessee.

When people say, “Memphis blues ain’t what it used to be,” they haven’t heard the Daddy Mack Blues Band. All of its members at one time or another played in the Fieldstones, one of the most talked-about urban blues bands since the 1970s. Led by Mack Orr on lead guitar and vocals, this four-piece group is down-home and funky, and the best band around for cuttin’ loose on a Friday night. Their raw approach to blues is something too often missing in contemporary blues. Since 1998, they have been the house band at the Center For Southern Folklore on Beale Street, where thousands of tourists from all corners of the world have experienced their natural and soulful musical blend. They have also toured across the country, from Huntsville to Las Vegas, and played in Europe. From barbecue dives in Mississippi to Paris, France, Daddy Mack has “been there done that.” He isn’t too shy to play a party for a gathering of governors from all across the United States or to walk right into the middle of a crowd with his wireless and play guitar licks while his sweat drips right onto the shoes of hollerin’ blues fans. Daddy Mack is not only doing his part to keep the blues alive for the 21st Century, he’s not compromising what he thinks blues is supposed to be – fun, and with the right balance of showmanship and good music.

Individual tickets are on sale for the Black Box Concert Series online at www.athensartscouncil.org, by phone at 423-745-8781, and at The Arts Center, 320 North White Street, Athens, Tennessee 37303.

Ewing Gallery: 2016 Artist in Residence Biennial

Category: Exhibitions, visual art and Free event

Opening Reception: Thursday, January 14, 5-7 PM in the Ewing Gallery of Art and Architecture

The presence of acclaimed artists—who have lived and worked in major cultural centers across the country—enhances the educational opportunities for both undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in the University of Tennessee School of Art. With daily contact over the course of a full semester, resident artists develop a unique relationship with the student body which complements the creative stimulation offered by guest lecturers and the School of Art's faculty. Representing diverse ethnic, cultural, educational, and professional backgrounds, these resident artists introduce another layer of candor and a fresh artistic standard for the students who, though early in their formal art studies, are beginning to develop their own perceptions, skills, and theories in connection with the making of art.

Exhibiting Artists: Molly Zuckerman-Hartung, Aliza Nisenbaum, Caitlin Keogh, Dominic Terlizzi

Gallery hours: M-F 10-5, Sun 1-4. Ewing Gallery, 1715 Volunteer Blvd on the UT campus, Knoxville, TN 37996. Information: 865-974-3200, www.ewing-gallery.utk.edu
