The City of Knoxville and Knox County Public Library have teamed up again to bring free outdoor movies to the Midway at Chilhowee Park this fall. The lineup was decided by a public vote. No tickets or reservations are required this year. The grounds open at 6 p.m., and the movies will start at 7:30 p.m. The first few rows will be reserved for moviegoers who want to bring chairs and blankets to enjoy the movie. Designated spots will still be available for guests to drive in and park. Popcorn and concessions such as hot dogs, nachos, doughnuts, and hot cocoa will be available. (Moviegoers can also bring in their own food and drinks; no alcohol or grills are allowed.) The Friends of the Library will distribute free bags of books while supplies last. Participants are encouraged to practice COVID-19 safety measures.

The origin story behind Drive-In at the Midway is, pre-pandemic, that Movies on Market Square entertained families. Drive-In at the Midway is the ingenious modification that allows everyone to stay safe and in their vehicular “bubble” while still getting to sample KCPL’s great collection of DVDs. OUTDOOR MOVIE NIGHT FEATURING "HOCUS POCUS"

“It’s just a bunch of Hocus Pocus”... literally! Well, that and a delicious dinner by the fire. Join us at Ancient Lore Village for an outdoor screening of “Hocus Pocus”, everyone’s favorite early-’90’s witchy film starring Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Kathy Najimy.

Feel like waking up and shouting, “Oh, look, another glorious morning!” We thought so. Make plans to stay overnight after the movie in one of our eight dwellings!

Art à la Carte, the Art Center’s brown bag luncheon and learning series, meets the fourth Friday in each month at 12 noon. While programs in the series may include artist or gallery talks, primarily we use films. Films typically focus on art history, museum collections, interviews with and/or demonstrations by various artists, and the creative muse or spirit. Programs are free and open to the public. Bring your lunch and a friend to lunch while you learn! The Art Center will provide coffee and/or tea. Currently we are showing several films from the series “Exhibition on Screen.” These movie length films were originally made to be shown in theaters around the world and feature in depth looks at the lives and work of some of the world’s most beloved or illustrious artists featuring historical footage, museum tours, close up imagery of the artists’ work and often interviews with curators, art historians, and occasionally family or friends. Each of the films will be shown in two segments with the center portion of the film repeated to help reacquaint viewers with where we left off the month before.

October 22 will feature Impressionist Renoir, Renoir: Revered and Reviled. The first part of the film was shown in September, so for those who might have missed it, we will begin the film early around 11:15 and let it play in its’ entirety. If you haven’t seen the beginning, you can still catch up!

The Knoxville Horror Film Fest will present its lucky 13th annual weekend of cinematic scares Thursday, October 21 through Sunday, October 24, with events split between Maryville, Tennessee’s Parkway Drive-In and the festival’s home base at Central Cinema.

It was COVID-era necessity that drove last year’s premier programming to the Parkway, but it’s pure pleasure that brings it back for a second year. Thursday night’s lineup will kick off the festival with a triple feature of John Carpenter’s ghostly 1980 classic The Fog, Rialto Pictures’ new 40th anniversary 4K restoration of Joe Dante’s The Howling (1981), and heavy metal horror cult item Trick Or Treat (1986). Friday night will continue the fun with the trailers of the 2021 KHFF Grindhouse Grind-out, followed by another triple feature of Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter (1984), An American Werewolf In London (1981) and SFX genius Phil Tippett’s years-in-the-making Mad God.

These drive-in programs are just the beginning for full KHFF passholders, who will rejoin the festivities through the weekend at Central Cinema. Over the course of Friday afternoon and all day Saturday and Sunday this crew of horror diehards will enjoy KHFF’s storied one-track marathon of short films, feature presentations and special events. Titles confirmed for this year’s feature competition include John Adams, Zelda Adams & Toby Poser’s Hellbender, Richard Bates Jr.’s King Knight, Jim Cummings & PJ McCabe’s The Beta Test, Lee Haven Jones’s The Feast, and Philip Gelatt & Morgan Galen King’s The Spine of Night, mixed in with cult flashback favorites Popcorn (1991) and a 40th anniversary restoration of Andrzej Żuławski’s 1981 classic Possession. (Short film programming, including a dedicated program of local “Tennessee Terrors” submissions, will be announced along with the festival schedule in early October.)
