The Knoxville Museum of Art is offering a one-week printmaking course which will introduce the student artist to several printmaking methods including relief prints, collagraphs with aluminum tape, monotypes and transfers with gelli plates. Some bookmaking and collage will be included. A special treat will be a field trip to the University of Tennessee College of Art Printmaking Department.

Fee for the workshop: Members $230/Non-members $250

When 32-year-old activist and father Ady Barkan is diagnosed with ALS and given four years to live, he finds himself in a deep depression, struggling to connect with his newborn son, whose presence reminds him of the future he will miss. But after a chance confrontation with Senator Jeff Flake goes viral, Ady decides to embark on a cross-country tour of America, using his final breaths to fight for healthcare justice. Ultimately, Ady discovers that collective action and speaking truth to power offers a source of hope for the future that transforms his relationship with his son and his belief in what is possible for his family.

Shannon Johnson
Shannon Johnson's work is inspired by nature and the creative process. Her paintings are a balance between harmony and contrast, simplicity and accumulation, and stillness and motion. Johnson studied at the University of Tennessee and received a BA in studio art. She taught high school art for 20 years. She exhibits her work at First Friday events and art shows in a variety of locations around Knoxville and regularly on Instagram (@shannondeanajohnson) and Facebook (Shannon Deana Johnson Art). She is represented by dk Gallery in Marietta, GA.

Elle Colquitt: Discovering the Unusual in the Usual
Photographer Elle Colquitt searches for the artistry that can be found within the layered imagery of window reflections. The surrealism within the reflection creates a double exposure illusion. This altered reality of abstract images produces a unique mix of forms and colors. Colquitt is content manager for OutdoorKnoxville.com, where her images showcase the beautiful naturescapes around East Tennessee. A registered architect and founding principal of CAMESgibson, Inc., Grant Gibson is committed to creating culturally relevant work. Desiring close and lasting relationships, he seeks to work with collaborators and clients equally committed to a more progressive future. He has oversaw the design and construction of a variety of projects, ranging from multi-family housing developments to small art installations to large civic planning initiatives. Prior to the founding of CAMESgibson, his most notable professional work was the development of Wabash Valley’s Urbanscape Furniture and the Sanders Residence in Jefferson City, MO and realizing UN Studio’s design of the Burnham Centennial Pavilion. (All of which was done as a member of Garofalo Architects.)

Gibson graduated with a Master of Architecture degree from the University of Illinois at Chicago. He has prior degrees from Purdue University in Architectural Engineering and Construction Engineering Technology.

Engaging the full spectrum of the discipline of architecture, Grant gives equal weight to writing, exhibiting, and teaching. A clinical assistant professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago, Grant teaches design and building technology courses.

Initiated in 2009 and incorporated a few years later, CAMESgibson, Inc. is not envisioned as a conventional architectural firm or practice. Founded by registered architect and educator Grant Gibson and the fictitious T.E. Cames, the office is best understood as a sustained architectural performance carried out with similar convictions to those held by Gibson’s late mentor, Doug Garofalo. Like (the now defunct) Garofalo Architects was, CAMESgibson is a cultural endeavor that challenges some and enables others to make the world a better place.

Filling the 150,000 square feet of downtown’s Gatlinburg Convention Center, the Gatlinburg Craftsmen’s Fair hosts Artisans and Craftsmen from all over the nation. Two hundred booths with unique and one-of-a-kind handmade products, are beautifully displayed, as these skilled craftspeople demonstrate their talents. Each participant is subject to a rigorous jury process to ensure the uniqueness and quality of their respective products. All items represented are handmade and of utmost quality-and without duplication. Look for exceptional pottery pieces, molded leather, copper art, local candy makers, and many more unique items.

There is something for everyone at the Fair. The Gatlinburg Craftsmen’s Fair and Smoky Mountain Resort Ministries provide a free Kid’s Corner during our July fair, with a selection of DIY crafts for our youngest visitors to take home with them. Also be sure to stop by one or all of our daily music shows included with the price of admission. Check out the stage and enjoy contemporary country, bluegrass, and your favorite gospel tunes at 12 and 3 daily.

Pellissippi State Community College’s newest art exhibit has a little something for everyone.

“The Indispensables,” on display until Oct. 22, features the work of Pellissippi State’s four adjunct visual art instructors: John Allen, Anna Halliwell Boyd, Marty Komorny and Tatiana Potts -- their works, processes and investigations as varied as they are.

“The exhibition is a survey of our underrecognized colleagues’ talents and hard work and spans many mediums,” said Associate Professor Herb Rieth. “Drawing, painting, sculpture, installation, photography and printmaking are all explored here, often in thought-provoking and striking ways.”

• John Allen earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts in Drawing from Clemson University in 2010 and his Master of Fine Arts from University of South Florida in 2014. His work spans various media including drawing, sculpture, photography and printmaking, and is often focused on process, especially aspects that are experimental, meditative or imaginative. His work on display at Pellissippi State includes “Case Studies I-IV,” silver gelatin pinhole prints in converted found objects such as old luggage.
• Anna Halliwell Boyd is a mixed media artist who earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts in 2D Studio Art from the University of Tennessee in 2008 and her Master of Fine Arts in Painting from Savannah College of Art and Design in 2018. Her recent works explore themes of loss and how the past is recollected, with photographs she took growing up resurrected to convey lost connections with others and the distorted nature of memory. The original printed photographs are sanded, erased and painted on with the intent of creating separation between the figures and the viewer, just as they are now separated from the artist. Another installation redacts details from the artist’s old school notes, with the blank spaces she created in them serving as lapses in memory.
• A native of Cleveland, Ohio, Marty Komorny received her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Printmaking from Southern Illinois University, as well as a Master of Arts in Philosophy. She spent a motivational year picking fruit in the great Northwest, living out of a blue van, before returning to school to study Printmaking at the University of Tennessee. She continues to garden and make drawings, watercolors and prints from her home in Maryville.
• Tatiana Potts is a native of Slovakia who received her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Printmaking from the University of North Carolina, Asheville, and her Master of Fine Arts degree in Printmaking from the University of Tennessee. Potts incorporates images, artist books and paper installations into a world that reflects her experiences and perspectives living, traveling and studying in Europe and the United States. Images are printed with printmaking processes such as screen print, intaglio, relief and lithography and then folded piece by piece and composed into one installation with glue, magnets and Velcro.

“The Indispensables” is free and open to the public 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Friday until Oct. 22. Bio: My family moved from Las Vegas, Nevada in 2019 to Knoxville to enjoy the four season change of climate. I have a BA from UNLV and enjoy the ability to paint around the East Tennessee area.
