MFA THESIS EXHIBITIONS

April 15 - 22, 2023
Reception: Friday, April 19, 5-7pm
Ewing Gallery of Art + Architecture

Landin Eldridge
Prove It.

Prove It. is an installation of large and small-scale autobiographical drawings centered around the desire to be understood, heard, and loved. I take images and memories that hold significance (A photo of a class pet, a Valentine’s Day card from my mom, a voice recording from a friend) and translate them into ink, gouache, colored pencil, and pen. Certain moments are repeated throughout the room, allowing narrative to peek through dense visual information.

Casey Wolhar
A Held Breath

This installation features a combination of large and small scale videos surrounded by glittering kitsch materials. The exhibition addresses the uncomfortable process of claiming space for yourself by putting the fragmented body on display. The audience is then asked to search for comfort within the presented unease.

UTHC Distinguished Lecture Series: “A Counterhistory of Data Visualization” with Lauren Klein

  • April 15, 2024

Category: Free event, History, heritage, Lecture, panel and Virtual

Monday, April 15
When: 3:30 PM ET
Lindsay Young Auditorium (rm. 101)
John C. Hodges Library
1015 Volunteer Blvd.
Knoxville TN
OR via livestream at tiny.utk.edu/DLS-Klein

About the Talk:
Visiting scholar Lauren Klein (Emory University) will give a public talk titled "A Counterhistory of Data Visualization" as part of the UT Humanities Center’s 2023-2024 Distinguished Lecture Series. In the world today, when we encounter a line graph or a pie chart, we tend to think of the role of visualization—if we think of it at all—as simply revealing the meaning of the data underneath. The reality, however, is that the act of visualizing data generates meaning in and of itself. This talk will return to the origins of modern data visualization in order excavate this meaning, showing how data visualization always carries a set of implicit assumptions—and, at times, explicit arguments—about how knowledge is produced, and who is authorized to produce it.

The lecture is free and open to the public and is held in Hodges Library’s auditorium on the UT Knoxville campus. Public parking is available in the Volunteer Hall parking garage for our off-campus visitors. Everyone is welcome!

About the Speaker:
Lauren Klein is Winship Distinguished Research Professor and Associate Professor in the departments of Quantitative Theory & Methods and English at Emory University, where she also directs the Digital Humanities Lab. She works at the intersection of data, AI, and the humanities, with an emphasis on questions of gender and race. Klein is coauthor (with Catherine D’Ignazio) of the award-winning Data Feminism (MIT Press, 2020), and coeditor (with Matthew K. Gold) of Debates in the Digital Humanities (Univ. of Minnesota Press), among other volumes. She is currently completing Data by Design: An Interactive History of Data Visualization, forthcoming from the MIT Press, and envisioning the Atlanta Interdisciplinary AI Network, which will launch in Fall 2023.

THE STORY: In an adaptation full of sparkling wit and cynical humor, this political comedy follows the meteoric rise of ambitious young Stensgaard, an office-seeker who’s willing to say anything to win an election. Forming the “League of Youth” to lobby against his opposition, Stensgaard schemes, romances, and manipulates in his rush to power. Ibsen’s most popular play in his lifetime, THE LEAGUE OF YOUTH caused fighting in the streets, with conservatives claiming it was an attack on their party and liberals claiming it was an attack on theirs! A thought-provoking comedy that’s sure to feel shockingly familiar.

Pamela Salyer: A View Through the Trees

This series uses mixed media (acrylic, collage, photo transfer) to explore the relationship between bare trees and their surroundings—how a tree, a group of trees, or even just a few branches, can change our perspective on the world around us. Pamela Salyer studied with UK’s Open College of the Arts and was juried in as a member of the Art Gallery in 2017. She has been part of many juried exhibits in the Knoxville area, including the Arts & Culture Alliance National Alliance National Juried Exhibition, Arts in the Airport, and The District Gallery’s “The Big Tiny Show.”

Jack Retterer

Jack Retterer says his goal as an artist is simple: “Use photography to help others experience and understand life more deeply and more completely by making it easier to ‘stop and smell the roses.’” He maximizes the emotional impact in his photography to increase the viewer’s awareness. Retterer is a fine art photographer, teacher and poet. His American Impressionist style photography and large canvas prints have been displayed at the Art Market Gallery, the Arts & Culture Alliance, Arts at the Airport, and many other locations in East Tennessee.
