Pellissippi State: James Agee Conference

  • September 13, 2019

Category: Classes, workshops, Free event, Lecture, panel and Literature, spoken word, writing

New York Times bestselling author Leigh Ann Henion will give the keynote address at this year's James Agee Conference for Literature and Arts at Pellissippi State. An annual literature and arts conference at Pellissippi State Community College now includes editing and publishing presentations, in response to interest from local writers.

The fourth annual James Agee Conference for Literature and Arts will be held noon-7:15 p.m. Friday, Sept. 13, in the Goins Building Auditorium on the college's Hardin Valley Campus, 10915 Hardin Valley Road.

The event is free and open to the public. There is no pre-registration. Check-in will be held 11-11:50 a.m. on site the day of the conference.

Thomas Alas Holmes of East Tennessee State University will lead the editing discussion 12-12:30 p.m., while Beto and Bob Cumming of Iris Press will lead the publishing discussion 12:30-1 p.m.

The rest of the afternoon will feature master classes in Nature Writing with Kim Trevathan, an associate professor of writing/communications at Maryville College who is writing his latest book about canoeing the Tennessee River from Paducah, Kentucky, to Knoxville last year; Songwriting with Tiffany Williams, an Eastern Kentucky native who released her debut EP, "When You Go," earlier this year; and Fiction Writing with Caleb Johnson, author of the novel "Treeborne," an honorable mention for the 2019 Southern Book Prize.

Leigh Anne Henion, author of "Phenomenal: A Hesitant Adventurer's Search for Wonder in the Natural World," will take the stage at 6 p.m. for the conference's keynote presentation. Henion, who has had stories noted in three editions of "The Best American Travel Writing," penned her memoir after becoming a mother and questioning whether "experiencing earth's most dazzling natural phenomena" could reawaken a sense of wonder in herself similar to the one she witnessed daily in her child, who would marvel over simple things in nature.

The conference will wrap up with a signing with all the authors, and Union Avenue Books will be on site with books available for purchase.

For the entire schedule of this year's James Agee Conference, visit www.pstcc.edu/events/ageeconference.

Expect hard-hitting original work by this ensemble of actors dedicated to illuminating issues in our community, led by Artistic Director John Ferguson and playwright Linda Parsons.

As Flying Anvil Theatre’s social justice wing, The Hammer Ensemble uses theatre to generate awareness and insight concerning complex issues facing our society, including equality, social justice, health, communication, and the environment. Nearly six million Americans live with Alzheimer’s disease and, in its wake, social services and healthcare systems in communities, especially in-home caregivers, are increasingly stretched and stressed. In response to this epidemic that seems to touch everyone (including most of our ensemble and our playwright), and as a natural fit for the Hammer’s mission, we created Light Years: A Journey with Alzheimer's, a play of a family in crisis coming to terms with a family member’s decline into Alzheimer’s/dementia.

Knoxville’s annual Walk to End Alzheimer’s occurs a week after our play, on September 21. Light Years will tie into this event in a cross-pollination of education, entertainment, and action in the community.

The Carpetbag Theatre: Red Summer

  • 7:30PM

Category: History, heritage and Theatre

Red Summer comes to the Bijou Theatre as part of Carpetbag Theatre's 50th Anniversary Celebration

WWI ended in 1919. Black men who served felt they deserved the full rights of citizenship and higher social status in return for their patriotic service. Meanwhile, lynch mobs murdered 78 African-Americans, ten of whom were veterans. East Tennessee was a place where a trade group proclaimed: "There are no Ku Klux Klan outrages here. We are a distinct and peculiar people." Red Summer, directed by Leilani Chan, is a drama based on events that occurred right here in Knoxville, TN during the racially charged Summer of 1919. It tells the story of a model African American community unable to escape the horrors of mob violence. "In the early hours of Saturday morning, August 30, 1919, a young white woman, Bertie Lindsay, was shot and killed in the bedroom of her home. Before dawn, a black man had been arrested and charged with the crime. Join the longest running Black Theater in the U.S. as they tell this incredibly important story.

Art Market Gallery: Featuring Dennis Sabo & Johnny Glass

Category: Exhibitions, visual art, Fine Crafts and Free event

September Featured Artists - First Friday Reception: September 6, 5:30 – 9 p.m.

Both painterly and emotionally charged, Debbis Sabo photographic artwork is reminiscent of how the impressionists recorded light. His fine art natural world abstracts and landscapes are often sought out by home decor and interior designers and has been included in solo and group art gallery exhibitions, commercial installations and private home collections throughout the United States and internationally. Says Dennis, “My September art exhibition covers our aqueous planet Earth from the marshes of Acadia National Park, Maine to the surf conditions in Tennessee and ends in Botswana, Africa. The art of photography is not taking a shot but transforming a composition into an emotional in-teraction with the viewer. My interest is in the natural details; how the environment on a particular day, in a par-ticular light, and at a particular moment in time correlates to my personal vision and interpretation of nature." www.dsabophoto.com
