The WordPlayers: Althea & Angela film

Category: Film and Free event

SUNDAY AT 4 PM – 5 PM

Free and Open to the Public
Fifth Avenue Baptist
2500 E. 5th Ave.
Knoxville, TN 37914

In 1955, Althea Gibson and Angela Buxton were world-ranked tennis players … yet no one wanted to partner with them in women’s doubles. In fact, few even wanted to talk with them. Post-War America was still very segregated and the tennis world was still very anti-Semitic. Eight years after Jackie Robinson had broken the color line in major league baseball, the tennis world lagged behind, clinging to its country club roots. Althea, a black woman from Harlem, and Angela, a Jewish woman from Liverpool, were outcasts in two nations. So they decided to join forces outside their own country. What happened then made history. Art Market Gallery: Lynda Best and Sherrie Wilson

Category: Exhibitions, visual art, Fine Crafts and Free event

March Featured Artists
First Friday Reception: March 3rd, 5:30 – 9:00 pm

Lynda Best, Painting
Lynda developed her own style for showing the frozen moment - “That moment when time stops, when we are a witness to nature and it fills us with a sense of wonder and awe.” Our spirit is found and often rediscovered in nature and it is this spiritual connection that nourishes and inspires her art. Lynda captures this “moment” with acrylic paint in a modern impressionistic style using entrancing outlines and colors to “freeze” that continual, ever changing movement of nature.

Sherrie Wilson, Fiber
A 4th generation fiber artist, Sherrie created couture clothing, art quilts, and watercolors before discovering SAORI weaving in 2015. She was immediately enthralled by the philosophy of self- expression without the need to conform. SAORI’s four directives inform her work: “Consider the difference between man and machine; See with eyes that shine; Be bold and fearless; Share freely within the group.”. Sherrie often uses found items, hand spun wool and wool locks in her work as well as traditional weaving yarn.

This three-day event is held on the Webb School of Knoxville campus in West Knoxville. For more than 20 years, ArtXtravaganza has rapidly grown to become one of the premier art shows in the Southeast, and has helped to further the careers of prominent artists.

ArtXtravaganza showcases the amazing range and diversity of artistic talent in the region and beyond, and helps establish Knoxville as a community aligned with the arts. Also on exhibit are works by Webb Lower, Middle and Upper School students.

Each year, ArtXtravaganza hosts a featured artist. This year’s featured artist is Jonathan Howe from Knoxville, TN.
