Beck Cultural Exchange Center: Beck-Met Gala
Category: Culinary arts, food, Festivals, special events, Fundraisers, History, heritage and Music
Beck is excited to announce that in celebration of our 50th anniversary, we will host the “Beck-Met Gala” on Monday, May 5, at the Grande on Clinton Highway. This event will emulate the iconic Met Gala, a charity affair that dates back to 1948 and supports the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. The Met Gala traditionally takes place on the first Monday of May, coinciding with the unveiling of the museum's annual blockbuster exhibition.
This year, the Met Gala theme is "Superfine: Tailoring Black Style," inspired by the thought-provoking book "Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity." We are thrilled to align our Knoxville event with this theme, creating our very own “Beck-Met Gala” at the same time as the festivities in New York. We will also host an engaging watch party, feature talented Black male models on the runway, and invite our entire community to join us for an unforgettable evening of style, fashion, entertainment, and vital fundraising efforts.
The evening will kick off with guests being greeted by paparazzi photographers, music, heavy hors d'oeuvres, and entertainment. Guests will enjoy a spectacular opening, including an opportunity to join the host on stage for a segment called “Tell Me About Your Look.” Finally, attendees will be treated to outstanding runway fashions presented by 25 Black male models showcasing styles from the early nineteenth century to futuristic designs.

Music and Lyrics by Stephen Sondheim
Book by George Furth
Surrounded by his circle of married friends, habitually single Bobby is forced to question his adamant retention of bachelorhood by examining the joys and pitfalls of companionship. Through an array of amusing and stirring interactions, the couples lead him on a compelling roller coaster of laughter, tears, and introspection. A tour de force of wit, intellect, and emotion, Sondheim’s brilliantly brisk and energetic musical score and witty lyrics delve deep into the human psyche, resulting in a delightful cocktail of hilarity, heartache, and self-reflection as Bobby explores and grapples with the idea of settling down himself.
