Bijou Theatre: Houndmouth

with Rayland Baxter
That first November 2011 night, when it all fell together at the Green House, was nothing more complicated than four friends playing music, armed with something to drink and a curiosity about what might happen. Houndmouth’s truths are emotional. Deeply emotional, that weird, powerful, essential thing the blues does that makes you feel better through the tears. Especially the songs which are deeply personal, like Halfway to Hardinsburg or Palmyra. Or the sad, slurring loss of Long as You’re Home, on which they sing, "Who am I supposed to be?" Themselves, of course.

The Irish Tenors first hit your screens in 1999 in their debut show with PBS and, in the words of the great Irish-American actor Martin Sheen: “once they’ve started, you can’t shut these guys up!” Thousands of concerts later they are still making music, laughing at each other, and poking fun at the world!

The Palace Theater: National Mountain Dulcimer Champion and Appalachian Folk musician - Sarah Morgan

  • March 22, 2014

Category: Music

The music of Sarah Morgan embodies her respect and joy of folk music and her creative approach to arranging. Backing traditional Appalachian melodies and haunting old time tunes with fresh harmonies and a progressive drive, she lends a new feel to seemingly "old" tunes, while accompanying pure and heartfelt vocals with the unpretentious sound of the Appalachian dulcimer. Folk, Americana, and Old-Time roots are brought to the forefront at live shows, where only Sarah and her dulcimer can be found behind the microphone, creating a subtle yet powerful sound that brings the relevant music of the past to today’s audience. Tickets $13 in advance and $15 at the door

Smoky Mountain Storytellers: World Storytelling Day

  • March 22, 2014
  • 2:00-4:00PM

Category: Festivals, special events, Fundraisers and Kids, family

WORLD STORYTELLING DAY, on March 22, 2014, 2-4 pm will be presented as a fund raiser by Smoky Mt. Storytellers Assoc. at Sweet Fanny Adams Theatre, 461 Parkway, Gatlinburg, TN 37738. Suggested donations, $7 at door, $5 for seniors, students and groups.

Storytellers this year are: Kathleen Mavournin, Jennifer Alldredge, Cuz Headrick, Susan Fulbright, Peggy Grover and Lew Bolton. All performers are members of National Storytelling Network, Jonesborough, TN, Volunteer State Tellers, Nashville, and Smoky Mountain Storytellers Association, Knoxville.

World Storytelling Day is a global celebration of the art of oral storytelling. On World Storytelling Day, as many people as possible tell and listen to stories in as many languages and at as many places as possible, during the same day and night. Participants tell each other about their events in order to share stories and inspiration, to learn from each other and create international contacts. SMSA member Millie Sieber brought this event idea back from her tour of Sweden. SMSA has been celebrating World Storytelling Day for six years.

WHAT IS STORYTELLING? Until you experience a storyteller who can take to you to worlds away, bring you back changed, you don’t know the power of Storytelling. Until you listen, totally focused on the words making movies in your head, you don’t understand the need for stories. When you are breathing the same air, in a huge group that is laughing in harmony, you can know the joy created in story. When your thoughts are those of peace, gifted to you in story, you can feel your heart beat with understanding. We all need the power, joy, laughter, harmony and peace given through Stories. Storytelling has been a part of the culture and heritage of humans since time began. We are hardwired to learn and retain through stories. It is the oldest and best way to teach, entertain and enlighten. In the 1980s, storytellers in the region who met and performed in the East Tennessee area, especially the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, named their group “Smoky Mountain Storytellers Association”. They developed a Statement of Purpose and By-Laws, applied and became a non-profit corporation in 1994. With membership varying from 20-40 members, they have spread their living words all over the US, Internationally from China, Ireland, England, France, Denmark, Norway, Africa and on the seas.

Donated items are still being accepted. 10% of sales at The Well will go directly to the Joy of Music School in the name of Rick Wolfe. There will be $7 all you can eat gumbo with a selection of chicken, sausage, shrimp, veggie, or a mix served from 6:00-9:00. The Well's regular menu will also be available from 6:00-1:00am.
