The Rose Center Council for the Arts with the Student Advisory Council: Geekin’ Out Symposium

Ready to get your geek on? The Rose Center Council for the Arts with the Student Advisory Council will be hosting its first ever Geekin’ Out Symposium! This event will target high school and middle school students so that they can experience two days of Visual Arts, Forensics Speech and Debate, Theatre, Dance, and Vocal Performance in a collegiate template.
The event will begin on Friday, March 14, 2014 at 5PM till 9PM in Prater Hall. Friday night will be offering snacks, tours of the historic Rose Center, college booths, and performances/exhibits by Saturday’s teachers.
Classes will begin on Saturday, March 15, 2014 at 12PM till 9PM. Saturday will be filled with a wide variety of classes for the students, door prizes, and a pizza dinner. Classes range from drama offering of “Cold Readings: Audition Nightmare or Actor’s Best Friend?” to visual art offering of “Not Your Oldfart Art”, from dance offering of “The Barre and Butter of Ballet: A Class for Beginners” to vocal offering of “Loud and Clear: Healthy Voice Habits for Singers and Non-Singers Alike”. Each class is taught and designed by a college student or recent college grad. The aim is to not only educate the community’s youths about the arts, but encourage students to pursue the arts in higher education.

Admission for the two-day event is $40/$25 each additional sibling.

Athens Area Council for the Arts: Evening with the Stars

Athens Community Theater presents Evening With the Stars XI, a Community Showcase of Talent, on Friday, March 14, 7:30 PM at The Arts Center. Evening With the Stars is an annual event that features auditioned talent from around the region.

Proceeds from Evening With the Stars benefit the Athens Area Council for the Arts. Farragut Folklife Museum: Tennessee Women of Vision and Courage

The Farragut Folklife Museum invites the community to a special presentation on "Tennessee Women of Vision and Courage," a compilation of stories about women who have contributed significantly to the rich heritage of Tennessee during its more than 200 years as a state. The evening will begin with book signings at 6 p.m. followed by the 6:30 p.m. presentation on Friday, March 14, 2014, in the Farragut Town Hall Board Room.

Co-editor Charlotte Crawford and contributing authors Dr. Judy Arnold and Patricia Hope will lead the presentation, highlighting two women included in the book - Elizabeth "Quatie" Brown Henley Ross, a Cherokee Indian, and Elizabeth Rona, a scientist who was active during the Manhattan Project in Oak Ridge. "Tennessee Women of Vision and Courage" features several East Tennessee women; the vivid stories of the 22 women selected for this book reflect events in Tennessee history such as women earning the right to vote, compulsory education for children, racial justice, and equal opportunities for all. The book will be available for purchase in the Folklife Museum Gift Shop.

The Farragut Folklife Museum is committed to preserving the heritage of its East Tennessee community and features a remarkable collection of artifacts from the area, including an extensive collection of the personal belongings of Admiral David Glasgow Farragut, first Admiral of the U.S Navy and hero of the Civil War. Housed in the Farragut Town Hall located at 11408 Municipal Center Drive, the museum is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and offers free admission. 2014 Fly Fishing Film Tour

The 2014 Fly Fishing Film Tour, hosted by 3 Rivers Angler and benefiting Legacy Parks, will be presented at the Relix Theater on Friday, March 14th. A collection of inspiring and tantalizing films has been compiled into this 2.5-hour showing. The filmmakers are excellent storytellers with footage that captures alluring and diverse explorations. Tickets can be purchased at the 3 River Angler. All proceeds from this event will benefit Legacy Parks Foundation.

Appalachian Arts Craft Center: Spring Porch Sale

The Appalachian Arts Craft Center in Norris will hold its Spring Porch Sale starting Thursday, March 13, and running for about two weeks. The Porch Sale, held each Spring and Fall, features marked down stock, seconds, student crafts and unjuried work by members of the Craft Center. It’s an excellent time to get great deals. Baked goods will also be available for purchase.

The Appalachian Arts Craft Center is a nonprofit center that has been fulfilling its mission by promoting traditional artists and crafts in the East Tennessee area for over 40 years. Historic Ramsey House: Vintage Baseball Exhibition

Historic Ramsey House and the Knoxville Holston’s Vintage Baseball team will be hosting an exhibit of Vintage Baseball items from the collection of Tracy Martin. Tracy is a lifelong collector of vintage items and has been playing in a vintage league in Ohio for 20 years. Come and visit this unique display and help us celebrate the opening of Tennessee’s Vintage Baseball League on April 12. The exhibit will be located in the Visitor Center at Ramsey House during regular business hours.

Art Center in Athens: Annual High School Art Show

The Athens Area Council for the Arts announces the annual High School Art Show showcasing art from McMinn county high school students. The work can be viewed at The Arts Center, 320 North White Street, Athens, Tennessee. The goal of this show is to promote art by local high school students and to provide them with an opportunity to participate in an open art exhibit. The Visual Arts Committee of AACA will sponsor a gift certificate for art supplies as a “Best in Show” prize. The show features over forty pieces in a variety of media from pencil to printmaking and papier mâché. The opening reception is Friday, March 14 from 5:30 – 7:00 p.m. The reception will include light refreshments and is free and open to the public. Evening with the Stars, AACA’s annual event featuring local performing talent, starts immediately after at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for students.
