Anyone who knows Bill Alexander knows his twin passions for poetry and for the "mountain berry basket." The basket was made to hold berries and was handy because it could be made on the spot from a scored and folded piece of poplar bark. Bill will talk about his research, the baskets he has collected, and the baskets he has made, as well as share his poetry. The mountain berry basket was selected as the design for the 2011 Museum of Appalachia Fall Homecoming pin. the foremost authority of baskets, Bill is the author of Mountain Berry Baskets and Mountain Poetry. He is a member of the Tennessee Basketry Association and Southern Highland Craft Guild as well as an authority on bark mountain berry baskets. Join us in learning about "The Forgotten Basket of the Mountains."

The program is sponsored by the Harriet Z. Albers Memorial Fund and is free and open to the public. The lecture will begin at noon at the East Tennessee History Center, 601 S. Gay Street, Knoxville. Guests are invited to bring a “Brown Bag” lunch and enjoy the lecture. Soft drinks will be available for purchase. ET! Speaker Series: Creative Place Making

East Tennessee is an area rich in music and visual arts. Elected officials and leaders can create economically competitive communities by using these “arts” to increase the livability of that respective municipality. Lively and vibrant communities are poised to attract entrepreneurial economies that create jobs, attract new industries in the creative market sector, and grow wealth. In rural communities, Main St. revitalization programs that involve both cultural and historic inventory have become economic engines to those communities, while local regional economic development agencies have focused efforts on attracting industries in the creative market sector

Exhibition by Julie Warren Conn: Shaping Stone and Molding Metal

Category: Exhibitions, visual art and Free event

DENSO Art Gallery

"...My inspiration comes from personal relationships, the wonders of nature, and marvelous sculptures from around the world. I admire the entire spectrum of art from the old masters to contemporary artists, as well as many fine ethnic expressions. Since the late 1990s, I have instructed art classes on ocean cruises, traveling to scores of countries and all continents. Experiencing the art treasures of many lands and cultures gives me fresh ideas and renewed motivation for sculpting. Picasso declared, “Art washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life.” In that spirit, I wish to create sculptural objects of beauty that bring joy and tranquility to the viewer."

Artist Reception opening day of exhibit, May, 12, from 5:30pm to 8:30pm.
Exhibit will be open 10am to 6pm, Monday through Friday.
