The 14th annual Vestival, South Knoxville's Art & Heritage Festival, will be held Saturday, May 10, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on the grounds of
the historic Candoro Marble Factory showroom in the Vestal neighborhood of South Knoxville. The building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. This year, guests are invited to park and ride to Vestival on free shuttles provided by the South Knoxville Alliance. Shuttles will pick up festival attendees from the Disc Exchange parking lot on Chapman Highway and the site of the former Big Lots on Moody Avenue. Limited parking is still available within walking distance of the Vestival site.

Musical performers at Vestival 2014 are Tim Lee 3, RB Morris, Sidecar Symposium, Cereus Bright, Marble City Opera, Carpetbag Theatre, Jamie Cook, Four Leaf Peat, Jon Whitlock Trio, The Jank, Pamela Klicka Jazz Trio, and The Knoxville Ramblers.

Additional performers on the grassy stage include Circle Modern Dance and Dragonfly Aerial Arts.

Festival attendees can shop among a variety of vendors for local arts and crafts, plants, food items, jewelry, as well as get information from community groups and nearby businesses. Vestival tradition continues with the Mothers Day Brunch, free for mothers,
at 11 a.m. This year's art exhibit inside the historic showroom building features the quilts of 85-year-old Opal McCartney of Dandridge, Tenn. Guests will be invited to try their hand at quilting and create their own "quilt patch" with fabric paint. The exhibit opens with a reception on Friday, May 9, from 5-7 p.m. with hors d'oeuvres and live music from Old City Buskers.

Knoxville’s Unique Live Music Experience - Outside in the all-new North Garden!

Stacy Mitchhart, aka “The Blues Doctor,” and his six-member band from Nashville will headline the May 9 premier, and the Davis Mitchell – Labron Lazenby Blues Experience from Knoxville will open the show, which will go till 10 pm.

Featured artist of Vestival 2014.

Opal McCartney is the featured artist. She is 85 years old, and lives in Dandridge, TN. She has never belonged to any quilting circles or quilting groups. Mostly just works alone. She owned and operated DANDRIDGE BOAT DOCK on Douglas Lake for 35 years. It was a place with vacation rental cabins, campground, live bait, fishing supplies etc... The boat dock was closed during winter months November to April, and she used that time to make quilts. Sold them to supplement her income. She continues to make and sell quilts. She is mostly a basic patchwork quilter...very few applique-style quilts...no "fancy" embroidery. The exhibition features 10-15 quilts. A table with fabric paint tubes for folks to paint/create a their own quilt patch. A quilting frame will be set up...outside if the weather is nice, indoors if it rains....with several needles full of thread for people to stitch on a quilt and see what it is like to try quilting stitches. Music by Old City Buskers, snacks and wine.

Homeschool Friday Program "Insects: Friend or Foe" at Freels Bend Cabin for grades K-2 and grades 3-6. Students receive an introduction to the common order of insects, their physical characteristics, and incredible adaptability. Field activities involve collecting insects for identification and observation. Cost for one-hour program at 10:30 am for K-2 is $7.00 non-member and $5.00 for AMSE member, while cost for two-hour program at 12:30pm for grades 3-6 is $12.00 for non-member and $9.00 for AMSE member. The Athens Area Council for the Arts announces “Singer Songwriters in Concert” featuring local musicians on Friday, May 9 at 7:30 at The Arts Center in Athens.

Four singer-songwriters influenced by rock, folk, and a variety of other genres take the stage in the Sue E. Trotter Theater for an evening of original music in a “writers in the round” coffeehouse-style performance. The Singer Songwriters who will perform are: Tim Merema, who works at the Center for Rural Strategies and performs and records with his wife, Liz; Wayne Scarborough, the Assistant General Manager at Athens Utilities Board, who, in his twenties made a living playing and singing; Andrew Kimball, of local band September Song, who is a veteran performer in AACA concerts and a history teacher at Athens City Middle School; and Hendree Harrison, who is no stranger to the Black Box stage and the rector at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Athens.

The House Blend Concert Series gives stand-out local talent the opportunity to perform in a professional setting and allows the audience to experience an intimate concert in a world-class atmosphere. The series includes at least four concerts annually, two of which are “Open Mics” open to performers to sign up and free to the public.

Proceeds from The House Blend Concert Series benefit the Athens Area Council for the Arts outreach programming. Memorial Health Care System Foundation will host the fourteenth annual Cam Busch Endowed Arts for Health Lecture Series and Gallery Event on May 9, 2014, from 6:00 – 9:00 p.m. in the beautiful new Heart Center in the North Tower at Memorial. Once again, the Lecture Series brings to Chattanooga an exceptional presentation – featuring Los Angeles Philharmonic violinist, Robert Gupta.

When Robert was caught between a career as a doctor and as a violinist, he realized his place was in the middle, with bow in hand and a sense of compassion in heart, he founded Street Symphony, a non profit organization dedicated to bringing live, classical music to the mentally ill, imprisoned and homeless. Hear his moving story of society’s marginalized and the power of music therapy. This year the event offers a unique, one-time Gallery Event. Mingle with other local art lovers at the new North Tower Heart Center at Memorial while viewing a collection of works by local and regional artists. Each piece has been specifically chosen by Memorial’s art selection committee for display in the new North Tower Heart Center. Pieces may be sponsored at the Gallery Party and permanent recognition will be displayed with each piece.

Individual tickets are $50 each and include sumptuous hors d’oeuvres, the host bar, access to view a collection of works by local and regional artists, and an amazing performance by Robert Gupta. The Athens Area Council for the Arts announces Artists Behind the Exhibits showcasing art by members of the Visual Arts Committee of AACA. The goal of this exhibit is to give the community an opportunity to view the art of the people who bring art shows to The Arts Center. There is a variety of styles represented in the four individuals of the committee: Jerry Hagaman, Chris Ingram, Jennifer Nunley, and Jan Burleson.

A benefit for local underprivileged children in conjunction with AIGA Design Week.

Come peruse a gallery of brilliant artwork created by local children. Each piece will be priced based on materials, time and scale, just as a professional artist would, to teach the children about working as an artist.
Refreshments will be served by Tomato Head.
Artwork will be displayed through May 9.

We’ve collected a bevy of art from local elementary school students. We’re then taking that art, displaying it within Remedy Coffee, marking each piece for sale. We’ll then take 100% of the money raised, pick a local underprivileged school, buy art supplies, and donate them to the children. Monday through Thursday, the art will be displayed and available for sale. We also have a website dedicated to raising funds, if you cannot make the gallery showing. http://kids.aigaknox.org
