Category: Free event, Literature, spoken word, writing, Music and Theatre

A musical adaptation of John Bunyan’s allegory, Pilgrim’s Progress, will be presented at The Square Room, 4 Market Square, as part of The WordPlayers’ Staged Reading series. Composed by Ted Nichols in the form of a short opera, it was first performed at the Seventh Annual Religious Music Festival in Helsinki, Finland, in 1977. The WordPlayers is honored to partner with Arts of Faith International to introduce this incredible work to Knoxville. Free admission and no reservations required.

Follow the spiritual journey of Pilgrim from the City of Destruction to the Celestial City! The original story, written in 1678, has been translated into over 100 languages, more than any other book besides the Bible, and is remarkable for the beauty of its language, its vivid imagery, and its realistic characters. The composer, Ted Nichols, has served as Director of Music at California State University, Minister of Music for the Church of the Open Door in Los Angeles and Bethany Bible Church in Phoenix, National Music Director for Campus Crusade for Christ International, and Director of Music at Western Conservative Baptist Seminary in Portland. For 8 years, he was the Musical Director for Hanna-Barbera Television Productions, where he wrote and arranged music for over 45 national television series, including Jonny Quest, The Flintstones, and Scooby Doo. He also composed over 30 film scores including two for the Billy Graham Association.

El cielito/LittleSky (Argentina/France 2004)
Félix is a juvenile drifter making his way through the interior of Argentina when a young rancher offers him work. As the owner of a farmstead that saw better days when his father was still alive, Roberto now relies on his wife to provide with her incessant work the bare minimum for the survival of the couple and their baby. Unable to resolve the tension, distrust and resentment leading to violence in the marriage, Félix responds to the baby’s need for protection. The bond developing between the young Félix and Chango, the baby boy he is caring for, carries the narrative forward with some of the most endearing moments ever depicted in film about the multifaceted potential of masculinity and parenting. Director and co-screen writer: María Victoria Menis, 95 min, Spanish with English Subtitles, PG 13 years

Birdhouse Gallery: Exhibition by Diana Roger

  • October 9, 2015 — October 31, 2015

Category: Exhibitions, visual art and Free event

Diana Roger's mixed media/assemblage art work is on exhibit at the Bird-Feeder Gallery in October. Please join us for the opening reception this coming Friday, October 9th from 6-9 at the Birdhouse 800 N. Fourth St. in the Fourth & Gill neighborhood.

My recent work is mixed media / assemblage created using a combination of traditional art materials and found objects from both the natural world and my urban surroundings. In the past I've made work that was, more often than not, expressive and very colorful but, with these newer pieces, I've made a concerted effort to strip down my usual style and create a subtler, more minimalist aesthetic. I don't have a particular theme or message in mind when I create but I have been making more of an effort, recently, to simply find things that are visually interesting and stimulating within my immediate surroundings. Because of this the work feels personal but it is also my attempt to communicate with other individuals who are also attempting to find beauty and artistic satisfaction in their everyday lives.

Please check the Birdhouse Community Center schedule of events for open hours at birdhouseknoxville.com. or call Gerry Moll at 480-239-0506 to make a special viewing appointment.
