Marble Springs: Living History Weekend

June 1st, 2017 will be the 221st anniversary of Tennessee’s admission as the 16th state in the year 1796. In conjunction with the Historic Homes of Knoxville, Marble Springs State Historic Site will commemorate this occasion with a living history weekend on Saturday, May 27th from 10 am to 5 pm, and Sunday, May 28th from 11 am to 4 pm. Guests can expect to experience 18th century demonstrations such as wood carving, spinning and weaving, 18th century style militia drills, weapons demonstrations that will showcase period appropriate firearms, and much more! Come celebrate Tennessee’s statehood with Marble Springs and the Historic Homes of Knoxville. This event is free. Donations are appreciated with all proceeds going towards grounds maintenance and educational programming at Marble Springs.

Zoo Knoxville: Ride for the Wild Side Cycling Event

Saturday, May 27, Support Zoo Knoxville’s animal conservation programs by taking a 10, 30- or 50-mile bike ride through east Knox County. Routes begin and end at Zoo Knoxville, and each has varied topography that includes hills, flats and beautiful scenery throughout the foothills east of Knoxville along the French Broad River. Suited for all levels of cyclists, this is a supported ride with clearly marked directions, fully stocked rest stops and a rider “support and gear” (SAG) vehicle to assist with any technical issues.

Beverages courtesy of Central Flats and Taps (must be 21 and have ID for alcoholic beverages).

James White's Fort: Tennessee Statehood Day

Historic locations in Knoxville and East Tennessee celebrate Statehood Day with free admission, tours, and events. The sites include places of historical significance in the exciting journey from the creation of our country to the founding of our state. The Historic Homes of Knoxville include: Blount Mansion, Crescent Bend, James White’s Fort, Mabry-Hazen House, Marble Springs, Ramsey House, and Historic Westwood. Each site will have individual ways of celebrating the birth of Tennessee. Please check with each home as to the date/time their event will take place. This is a free museum day to the public, with self guided tours. Tennesseeans for Living History volunteers will be demonstrating the lifestyle of 1796: Open Hearth and Fire Pit Cooking, Blacksmithing, Weaving, Spinning and other pioneer era tasks. Donations gladly accepted.

Calling All Good Sports!
Here's the deal. You purchase a ticket to a mystery event. Show up to The Central Collective at the specified date and time, and be ready for anything. Past events have included: a live studio game show, an egg drop competition, a garden party in a castle, a walking tour of North Knoxville, live music with swing dance lessons, an underground arcade, and an actual wedding were attendees served as the bridal party, toast-makers and wedding guests. These are events for folks who are curious, adventurous, and like trying new things & meeting new people.

Worried that you won't be able to participate because of dietary restrictions, physical ability or other preferences? We'll do our best to give you the information you need to decide if this month's Good Sport Night is right for you. If you have any concerns, don't hesitate to give us a shout! If you show up and cannot participate for an unforeseen reason, we're happy to give you a credit for a future Good Sport Night. Unless otherwise noted, these events are not programmed for children.

Blount Mansion: Statehood Day Open House

Construction on Blount Mansion began in 1792. The restored mansion was open for tours in 1930, making it the oldest museum in Knox County. Our performance begins with our Tappers who will perform the heart-warming tale of MATLIDA, using music from the musical inspired by the beloved children's classic by Roald Dahl. The journey continues with our Jazz and Hip Hop dancers who will dance to your favorite songs that draw inspiration from literature.... and for our Ballet Production our dancers from preschool to upper level pointe, will take part in telling of ALICE'S ADVENTURES IN WONDERLAND.

UT Arboretum Society: The Mysterious World of Lightning Bugs

The UT Arboretum Society will present a lecture on fireflies on Saturday, May 27th, from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at the UT Arboretum Auditorium. Please note: the subject of this program is not synchronous fireflies.

Robbie Meyer of the National Park Service will conduct the program, “The Mysterious World of Lightning Bugs.” He invites everyone to join him for this program on one of nature’s brightest insects, the firefly. The program will begin at 7:30 p.m. with a talk about the life cycle of fireflies and what makes them so fascinating. After the sun begins to set, we will move outside to view and attempt to catch some fireflies and observe them. You are welcome to bring something to use to catch the fireflies, but please keep in mind all fireflies will be released at the end of the program. Participants are welcome to bring a flashlight but are asked to keep it turned off during the program. A flashlight with a red light filter option is recommended. The UT Arboretum is located at 901 S. Illinois Avenue in Oak Ridge.

A donation of $5 per carload is asked, and we welcome additional donations to help support the UT Arboretum Society and its programs.

Floyd's Antiques: Music on the Lawn Series
