This set will feature arrangements of Brown’s music as well as Adams’ original compositions inspired by and dedicated to Mr. Brown. The night will continue with Margherita Fava’s tribute to late great composer and trumpeter Roy Hargrove, who’s musical voice influenced the sound of popular music from the 1990s onward. Don’t miss this opportunity to see two up-and-coming Knoxville based pianist-composers pay homage to the musical innovators who are impacting the NXT GEN!

Ijams Nature Center: Forest Bathing Workshop

  • October 23, 2022

Category: Classes, workshops, Health, wellness and Science, nature

Oct 23, 9:30-11:30 AM

Spend a relaxing two hours connecting with nature with ANFT-trained forest therapy guide Sarah Schortz at the Ijams Homesite.

Everyone knows that being in nature is good for our wellbeing, but often we don't know how to slow down and just BE to receive all the healing, restorative gifts that nature has to offer. During this two-hour, immersive experience, you will be guided through a series of relaxing activities designed to help you slow down, and mindfully engage with and explore the natural world through your senses while you discover new ways of being in and with nature. Forest bathing is different from educational nature programs in that the purpose is not to learn any new information, but to experience and connect with nature. Much like you would not read a book or study facts about a new friend, forest bathing facilitates a way of deeper knowing and understanding the natural world. This event is NOT a hike and involves very minimal walking. Most of the time will be spent together in the same area near the Miller Building. During the event, participants will alternate between gathering as a group and wandering about exploring on their own with suggested prompts provided by your guide. The purpose of this event is to create a space for you to have a meaningful, restorative experience in nature. All activities offered are optional for you to participate in or adapt as you like.

You may wish to bring a journal, something to write with, water, and a snack. You may also wish to bring a blanket or small outdoor chair if you prefer not to sit on the ground. Please wear comfortable clothing and shoes that you do not mind getting a bit of dirt on, and bring a raincoat if it's drizzly.

Tickets are $30 per person and must be purchased prior to the event.

Ijams Nature Center, 2915 Island Home Ave, Knoxville, TN 37920. Visitor Center open daily 10-6; grounds and trails open daily from 8 AM - dusk. Information: 865-577-4717, www.ijams.org

First Take Co.: Proof of Concept

  • October 22, 2022 — October 23, 2022

Category: Theatre

Our inaugural resident artist showcase premieres in Knoxville!
First Take Co. is dedicated to the multi-hyphenate artist’s exploration of their various interests, whether that’s acting, directing, playwriting, composition, or anything in between. PROOF OF CONCEPT provides those artists a chance to share early iterations of these explorations to facilitate discussion and spark ideas that take their projects to the next level. The three pieces featured this year:

shuffle by Alegra Batara
You are sitting alone in your childhood bedroom, and you find your old 4th Generation iPod Nano. Just for kicks, you charge it up and hit shuffle. You hear a song, a song you haven’t heard in years. A feeling grows in your chest, travels up your neck, down your arms, a heaviness as you are engulfed in nostalgia. Music is buried deep in our memories, bringing faces, voices, moments from the past back to life. What happens when the memories won’t go away?

Here Below with book and lyrics by Grace Belt, music by Grace Belt & Griffin Smith
Ghost stories, mountain passes, fireflies, and a night sky untainted by electricity. Several generations after the catastrophic Flares, a young Cartographer called Lou journeys to the Coast, determined to catch a ship before the summer solstice. Along the road, he is captured by a band of feral teenagers on their “divine mission” to reclaim the alleged Lost City of Columbia, SC. Forced to play navigator for the gallivanting pilgrims, Lou’s sense of reality gets muddled up with their visionary fervor –and the creeping old things of Appalachia become far less legendary.

The Bearcat by Ethan Graham Roeder
Garrett and Jessie are finally engaged, and they’ve prepared a blowout announcement at the last dance club in town, The Bearcat. There’s just one problem: Garrett’s father has no idea they’ve been dating, and would never approve of the match. In an act of campy desperation, Garrett ropes the denizens of the club — including his college roommate (now drag celebrity) — into a plan so ridiculous and borderline offensive it might work. Set in a town not unlike our own, THE BEARCAT is an exploration of gender and race politics within the generational divide in contemporary Southeast USA. Also, it’s a comedy. Promise.
