OneBeat's Knoxville Residency

Category: Classes, workshops, Free event, Kids, family and Music

Big Ears Festival is partnering with OneBeat in presenting 25 musicians from 17 countries in a series of workshops, discussions and public performances, culminating in a concert extravaganza at the Bijou Theater at 7pm on Wednesday, October 9, open to the public free-of-charge.

OneBeat, a cultural exchange initiative of the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs produced by Bang on a Can’s Found Sound Nation, is among the world’s leading music diplomacy programs. From September 16 - October 12, 2019, twenty-five innovative and socially engaged musicians from seventeen countries, ranging from Algeria to Cuba to Madagascar to the United States, will participate in an intense month of musical collaboration, public performances, installations, pop-up events and workshops.

OneBeat announces its 2019 ten-day tour throughout the Southeast U.S., including:
Oct. 7 at 7pm - Fourth Presbyterian Church in partnership with Big Ears - Knoxville, TN
Oct. 9 at 7:30pm - The Bijou Theater in partnership with Big Ears - Knoxville, TN

In each location, the OneBeat Fellows will present world premieres of their collaborative works-in-progress in a series of performances, workshops, and interactive public events.

While in Knoxville, OneBeat will present a panel discussion on global arts communities in collaboration with the multigenerational theatre ensemble Carpetbag Theatre, host workshops with The Joy of Music School and The Change Center, perform on WDVX’s Blue Plate special and in pop-up performances in downtown, and conclude with a rousing, high energy concert at Knoxville’s historic downtown Bijou Theater.

This year’s eclectic musicians include: Rodney Barreto, one of Cuba’s leading jazz drummers and member of the Chucho Valdes Quintet; Nepalese multi-instrumentalist and film music composer Jason Kunwar; pioneering modular Chinese synth designer and sound-artist Meng Qi; Baltimore-based producer, educator and award-winning entrepreneur Kariz Marcel; and virtuosic young Mongolian Yatga player Oyuntuya Enkhbat. To read about all the OneBeat fellows, visit www.1beat.org/people

The OneBeat tour brings Fellows’ musical collaborations, developed during their two-week residency at the Atlantic Center For The Arts in New Smyrna Beach, FL, to a diverse set of communities across this region of America, connecting with leading community-based organizations, local artists, audiences, and young people to build an even stronger network of musical change-makers and socially-engaged musicians.

Each performance or event will tell a unique story of OneBeat from individual and collaborative perspectives, in venues ranging from DIY theaters to public parks to art museums. Educational and collaborative workshops with local partners are integral to the OneBeat theme of exploring how artists can find innovative ways of locating their art within emerging movements for the betterment of humanity. These collaborations with local social organizations, youth, and artists serve as a launching pad into new ways of thinking about how we experience music.

Technical Society of Knoxville: Solid Waste Recycling with Tom Leonard

  • October 7, 2019
  • 11:30am-1:00pm

Category: Lecture, panel and Science, nature

Tom Leonard, General Manager, Sevier County Solid Waste will speak on “Solid Waste Recycling"

The Technical Society of Knoxville will meet on October 7, 2019 at the Crowne Plaza in downtown Knoxville.

People generate gaseous, liquid and solid wastes. Gaseous wastes have typically been dispersed into the atmosphere and the current practice of dumping unwanted carbon dioxide into the atmosphere is a big problem, but otherwise air pollution is improving. Liquid wastes were formerly dumped unceremoniously into the nearest river but rivers are much improved. Solid wastes from prehistoric times have been deposited in middens and much of what we know about past civilizations comes from a study of the remains of their solid waste. How much solid waste do we people living now generate and where does it go. What will future archaeologists find in our middens and where will they be and how voluminous will they be?

As an example of solid waste problems Rutherford County, Tennessee, is finding their "Mount Trashmore" is getting too big and they have consulted with Tom Leonard, General Manager Sevier Solid Waste on how a composting operation works for East Tennessee tourism communities.

Knox County and Knoxville are not immune to solid waste disposal problems and the Technical Society will have an opportunity to learn something about the solutions. Tom Leonard, General Manager, Sevier County Solid Waste, Inc will speak about solid waste recycling at the Technical Society of Knoxville meeting on October 7, 2019.

Technical Society of Knoxville meetings are held at Crowne Plaza Hotel, 401 W Summit Hill Drive and open to the public. Anyone interested in the meeting topic is welcome. Members and guests begin arriving around 11:30 AM and go through the buffet line. Cost is $13 per person payable in cash or by check in the meeting room to the designated collector. Cost without lunch is $7. A token for free parking in the hotel garage is included. Meetings are called to order at 11:55 and adjourned at 1:00 PM.

Visitors are welcome. For more information go to www.Technicalsociety.net
