Venezuela - Beginning of the End, or the End of the Beginning?

Ambassador William Brownfield has an extensive professional background. He was US Ambassador to Chile, Colombia, and Venezuela. In addition to that, he also served as Career Ambassador which is the highest rank in the US Foreign Service.

In January 1999, Hugo Chavez assumed office as president of Venezuela on a political platform of radical change. Venezuela had a prosperous middle class, was the world’s third-leading oil exporter, enjoyed 40 years of political and electoral stability, had a violent crime rate below the Latin American average and hosted millions of refugees and immigrants. Brownfield will discuss these matters in greater detail.

This event is part of the Ashe Lecture Series and is free and open to the public. Ashe Lectures are sponsored by former Knoxville mayor and US Ambassador to Poland, Victor Ashe . For the series, ambassadors and mayors are invited to speak on a variety of public matters, including foreign relations, diplomacy, world affairs, and local government. The series also is part of the Center's Leadership & Governance Program .

Organized in 2001, the Knoxville Photography Collective is a group of photographers who meet monthly to share images, technical information, encouragement, and inspiration. Members Katharine Emlen, Tony Hayzen, Owen Weston, Wayne Setser, David Bryant, Robert Minick, and Brian McDaniel each have distinctive styles and perspectives. Hayzen, for instance, is passionate about landscapes and wildlife photography, whereas Weston looks for hidden images in the commonplace.

Pieced is a collaborative exhibition of work by Melissa Everett Textiles and Nick DeFord

Melissa Everett: Each dyed, painted or printed textile, a unique work of art in itself, is cut and deconstructed to then be reconciled into a larger quilted piece. The steps taken resonate and reveal how hope and beauty can emerge from brokenness.

Nick DeFord: The work in Pieced represents both an exploration of mapping, but also the metaphoric properties of gaming and escapism. By embellishing the already decorative surfaces of game boards, it both accentuates their paths and trails, but also destroys their utilitarianism. Additionally, by starting to use alchemical signs, symbols, images and monsters, the work alludes to the transformation from low art to high art, from ephemera to gold, and from the starting square to finished line.

Join us in welcoming Pippin Long as our October First Friday artist. She is a native Tennessean and a graduate of UT Knoxville with a degree in art. While she enjoys experimenting with various mediums and techniques, Pippin’s main focus is in drawing and painting, and has worked with watercolors from a very young age. Her newest work explores portraiture and the treatment of skin using watercolor and negative space. Pippin currently makes her home in Asheville, NC.
