19255.jpg

Category: Free event, History, heritage and Lecture, panel

In a Brown Bag Lecture on Wednesday, October 9, author and historian Dewaine A. Speaks will discuss his new book, Historic Disasters of East Tennessee, chronicling the stories of a series of disasters that have taken place in our region. The 1902 Fraterville Mine explosion, took the lives of 216 men and boys. The New Market train wreck in 1904 claimed 64, and in 2016, the Great Smoky Mountains fire killed fourteen and destroyed 2,460 buildings. Floodwaters near Rockwood in 1929 took the lives of seven Boy Scouts and their Scoutmaster, while a 1960 explosion at Kingsport’s Eastman plant killed 16 workers and injured 400. Through interviews, newspaper articles, and extensive research, Speaks tells these and other stories of devastation, their effects upon the lives of those who experienced them, and, most inspiring, the outpouring of love and support that brought these communities together. A book signing will follow the lecture.

Dewaine Speaks has a B.A. from the University of Tennessee where he was a member of the Volunteers baseball team. He served in the United States Air Force, the Tennessee Air National Guard, and is currently a member of the East Tennessee Veterans Honor Guard. Dewaine retired from Robertshaw Controls Company where he was a national sales manager. He is a member of the Authors Guild of Tennessee and has published several works including an international travel guide, biography on Weston Fulton, and a book on the role of East Tennessee in WWII.

The lecture is presented by the East Tennessee Historical Society and sponsored by the Gentry Griffey Funeral Chapel and Crematory. The lecture and book signing are free and open to the public and will begin at noon. Guests are invited to bring a "Brown Bag" lunch and enjoy the lecture. Soft drinks are available.

OneBeat, a cultural exchange initiative of the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs produced by Bang on a Can’s Found Sound Nation, is among the world’s leading music diplomacy programs. From September 16 - October 12, 2019, twenty-five innovative and socially engaged musicians from seventeen countries, ranging from Algeria to Cuba to Madagascar to the United States, will participate in an intense month of musical collaboration, public performances, installations, pop-up events and workshops.

OneBeat announces its 2019 ten-day tour throughout the Southeast U.S., including:
Oct. 7 at 7pm - Fourth Presbyterian Church in partnership with Big Ears - Knoxville, TN
Oct. 9 at 7:30pm - The Bijou Theater in partnership with Big Ears - Knoxville, TN

In each location, the OneBeat Fellows will present world premieres of their collaborative works-in-progress in a series of performances, workshops, and interactive public events.

While in Knoxville, OneBeat will present a panel discussion on global arts communities in collaboration with the multigenerational theatre ensemble Carpetbag Theatre, host workshops with The Joy of Music School and The Change Center, perform on WDVX’s Blue Plate special and in pop-up performances in downtown, and conclude with a rousing, high energy concert at Knoxville’s historic downtown Bijou Theater.

This year’s eclectic musicians include: Rodney Barreto, one of Cuba’s leading jazz drummers and member of the Chucho Valdes Quintet; Nepalese multi-instrumentalist and film music composer Jason Kunwar; pioneering modular Chinese synth designer and sound-artist Meng Qi; Baltimore-based producer, educator and award-winning entrepreneur Kariz Marcel; and virtuosic young Mongolian Yatga player Oyuntuya Enkhbat. To read about all the OneBeat fellows, visit www.1beat.org/people

The OneBeat tour brings Fellows’ musical collaborations, developed during their two-week residency at the Atlantic Center For The Arts in New Smyrna Beach, FL, to a diverse set of communities across this region of America, connecting with leading community-based organizations, local artists, audiences, and young people to build an even stronger network of musical change-makers and socially-engaged musicians.

Each performance or event will tell a unique story of OneBeat from individual and collaborative perspectives, in venues ranging from DIY theaters to public parks to art museums. Educational and collaborative workshops with local partners are integral to the OneBeat theme of exploring how artists can find innovative ways of locating their art within emerging movements for the betterment of humanity. These collaborations with local social organizations, youth, and artists serve as a launching pad into new ways of thinking about how we experience music.

Dogwood Arts: "Pieced" by Nick DeFord and Melissa Everett

Category: Exhibitions, visual art, Fine Crafts and Free event

An opening reception will be held on Friday, October 4th from 5:30-8PM.

Pieced is a collaborative exhibition of work by Melissa Everett Textiles and Nick DeFord

Melissa Everett: Each dyed, painted or printed textile, a unique work of art in itself, is cut and deconstructed to then be reconciled into a larger quilted piece. The steps taken resonate and reveal how hope and beauty can emerge from brokenness.

Nick DeFord: The work in Pieced represents both an exploration of mapping, but also the metaphoric properties of gaming and escapism. By embellishing the already decorative surfaces of game boards, it both accentuates their paths and trails, but also destroys their utilitarianism. Additionally, by starting to use alchemical signs, symbols, images and monsters, the work alludes to the transformation from low art to high art, from ephemera to gold, and from the starting square to finished line.

Art Market Gallery: Featuring Marie Merritt & Linda Sullivan

Category: Exhibitions, visual art, Fine Crafts and Free event

October Featured Artists - First Friday Reception: October 4, 5:30 – 9 p.m.

Marie Merritt interprets the scenic vistas, babbling streams, lovely flora, and majestic animals she encounters in nature throughout her signature style of oil painting. She strives to impart the same sense of awe, peace and calm that she enjoys. She develops a quality of depth and dimension in her paintings that is sensitive and expressive by using traditional time honored techniques of multiple layers of oil paints and glazes. Marie, a native of East Tennessee, has received numerous awards, designations and recognitions with her art, including Certified Decorative Artist and Teacher of Decorative Arts. Her original works hang in private and corporate collections throughout the region and her art has been featured on book covers and in magazines. She is represented by the Art Market Gallery in Knoxville, TN and her work can be seen at www.mariemerritt.com

Linda Sullivan: My ceramic work for several years has consisted of wheel-thrown and hand-formed stoneware and porcelain fired to 2300 degrees F in the oxidizing atmosphere of electric kilns. I have had a special interest in developing unique glazes since graduate school at Northern Illinois University, where I received a Master of Fine Arts Degree. My work has often evoked landscape imagery. While I continue with that glaze approach, retirement a few years ago from a career in healthcare information technology allowed me time to finally begin experimenting with crystalline glazes.
The pieces in this show were made using porcelain clay with self-developed glazes containing chemicals, such as zinc oxide, that encourage development of crystals. I program a computerized kiln to reach a peak temperature of 2300 degrees and then cool slowly by holding at multiple specific temperatures for up to three hours at a time for crystal formation. Just as in nature, when conditions are right, crystals will develop and grow, resulting in unique pieces that differ from one another and cannot be duplicated. The process for creating crystalline work is challenging in that successful results require several steps to ensure that crystals form. Conditions must be correct – including appropriate clay body, fluid glazes with specific chemical ingredients and percentages, thickness of glaze, and firing/cooling kiln cycle are critical. The failure rate with this technique is greater than in my other work. However, experimenting with crystalline glazes has really captured my interest for now and has been very satisfying in spite of the unpredictability.
