Join the College of Architecture and Design for a public lecture by Pierre Belanger, Open Systems, on Monday, Oct. 21, 2019.

Belanger's lecture titled, "The Decolonization of Design," will discuss the power of institutions in influencing architecture, engineering and planning for the past 800 years. Through this influence, these institutions have normalized colonial systems of spatial inequity and white supremacy through standards, surveys, specifications and signifiers. Belanger claims that this sense of racial discrimination, territorial injustice and environmental inhumanity should be broken. He proposes a series of counter-projects and retroactive strategies that suggest supporting "undesign" and "unplanning" via the transgression of structures of oppression.

Belanger is a trained landscape architect and urban planner based in Boston. He has published two books and written for the Harvard Design Magazine and Wet Matter. In addition, Belanger received the Canada Prix de Rome in Architecture and curated the Canada Pavilion and Exhibition EXTRACTION at the 2016 Venice Architecture Biennale. Belanger is currently an LAF Fellow for Innovation and Leadership, a practicing designer and co-founder of the Landscape Infrastructure Lab.

This year’s Riggsby lecture, "Medieval Italy’s Bishops: A Mediterranean Episcopate in its European Context, c. 1050-1300," explores a distinctive aspect of the medieval Italian church: its extraordinarily high number of bishops. Professor Maureen Miller will sketch the distribution of bishops across the peninsula, the historical circumstances that yielded this plethora of prelates, and the vast differences in resources they had to carry out their pastoral duties. She will then turn to the ramifications of these conditions. How did this abundance of bishops influence the quality and character of pastoral care, the institutions of local churches, and the kinds of men who became diocesan leaders? Throughout the lecture, Miller will explore differences between northern and southern Italy as well as relations with the increasingly powerful bishop of Rome, the pope.

Maureen Miller is a professor of history at the University of California, Berkeley. Her research examines the capacity of individuals and societies for change during the social, economic, political, and cultural transformations of Europe during the eleventh and twelfth centuries. She has a particular interest in movements for reform during this period, as well as in the development of institutions, social relations, urban landscapes, and cultures of medieval Italian cities.

Come and join the spirits for a tour of Downtown Knoxville’s scariest landmarks. The tours, which last approximately two hours each, will visit the sites of some of Knoxville’s best-kept secrets. The tour will be about one and a half miles in length. All tours begin and end at James White’s Fort located at the intersection of Hill Avenue and Hall of Fame Drive. Ample free parking is available for tour participants at the Fort.

Tours are given October 17, 18, 22, 24, 28, 29, & 30th 7-9PM. Please plan to arrive between 6:30-6: 45 pm for check-in. Each tour will end with a marshmallow roast around the fires at the Fort.

Admission for Adults 16 and over will be $10.00 and $6.00 for children ages 6–15.

Organized in 2001, the Knoxville Photography Collective is a group of photographers who meet monthly to share images, technical information, encouragement, and inspiration. Members Katharine Emlen, Tony Hayzen, Owen Weston, Wayne Setser, David Bryant, Robert Minick, and Brian McDaniel each have distinctive styles and perspectives. Hayzen, for instance, is passionate about landscapes and wildlife photography, whereas Weston looks for hidden images in the commonplace.
