Zoo Knoxville: BOO! at the Zoo

BOO! at the Zoo presented by U.S. Cellular® begins this weekend! Knoxville’s favorite Halloween event features 12 nights of safe and not-too-scary fun scheduled over three weekends; Friday through Sunday, Oct. 11-13 and Thursday through Sunday, Oct. 17-20 and Oct. 24-27, from 5:30-8:00 p.m. each evening. A special night exclusively for zoo annual passholders and Circle of Friends members is scheduled for Thursday, Oct. 10 from 5:30 – 8:00 p.m. A Halloween tradition for 33 years, this family event features trick-or-treating through the zoo along the BOO! Trail on a new route through Asian Trek, the Bank of America Monster Mash Dance Party, friendly costumed characters and entertainers each night. Additional activities include the Scary-Go-Round, the BOO! Choo Train, the new Baba Yaga Haunted Forest, and camel rides. Each weekend will feature special appearances by Star Wars characters from the 501st Legion, famous princesses, and on Thursday, Oct. 24, Simon and Siouxsie from Nat Geo’s “Snake City” will be meeting guests.

Nick Cristano, 29 years old, loves his grandparents. He visits them every Sunday. They drive him crazy!! Nick's parents retired and moved to Florida. His sister got married and moved to California. Nick is left in New Jersey with both sets of his grandparents. Of course they love each other, but how can they possibly understand each other? Nick’s family is Italian-American. They have a saying: "Tengo famiglia," which doesn't translate very directly into English, but it expresses all the depth and complexities of family. It implies that family relationships provide the reason for being alive. Experience the hilarity and heart-break of this family, which may not be that far from your own.

McClung Museum: Film Screening: Silents in Motion

For one night only, marvel at magnificent, mesmerizing, majesty of early motion pictures!

The McClung Museum is partnering with University Libraries and School of Music to present a series of early films. Silent, 16-millimeter projections (or "silents") will have with live musical accompaniment.

The selection of works incudes some of the earliest moving images such as kinetoscopes, as well as films that demonstrate pioneering techniques in microscopy, X-ray imaging, and time-lapse. They draw close parallels with Harold Edgerton, Berenice Abbott, and the “father of motion picture,” Edweard Muybridge—photographers featured in the McClung Museum’s current exhibition, Science in Motion. The exhibition is on view at from September 20, 2019 – January 5, 2020.

YWCA: Talk and Toast with Ellen Reid

Pulitzer Prize-winning composer and native Oak Ridger Ellen Reid joins YWCA for the latest Talk and Toast! Thursday, October 10, 5:30 p.m. at The Grove Theater, 123 Randolph Rd, Oak Ridge, TN 37830.

Ellen will share excerpts and discuss her award-winning opera p r i s m, which confronts the difficult topic of sexual and emotional abuse. Immediately following, YWCA CEO Alizza Punzalan-Randle will moderate a panel discussion with YWCA staff and victim advocates on the topic of domestic violence. This event is one of several events being hosted by YWCA in October for Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

An Introduction to Musical Theatre and Opera with Maestro Brian Salesky

Brian Salesky is an American conductor of operatic and orchestral music. A Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Indiana University, he also studied at The Juilliard School. In the fall of 1978, Salesky first appeared at the New York City Opera, conducting Naughty Marietta. He went on to lead La traviata, Rigoletto (with Pablo Elvíra), Falstaff (with Donald Gramm and Muriel Costa-Greenspon, in Sarah Caldwell's production), the world premiere of Stanley Silverman's Madame Adare, Carmen, Les contes d'Hoffmann, etc., with the company. In 1980, the City Opera production of La cenerentola was televised over PBS, with Salesky leading Susanne Marsee, Rockwell Blake, and Alan Titus, to much acclaim. In Europe, Salesky has conducted at Barcelona's Gran Teatre del Liceu (L'elisir d'amore, with Alfredo Kraus), and then led concerts with Kraus and Renata Scotto, in Madrid and Granada. Elsewhere, he has appeared with Opera Australia (Adriana Lecouvreur), the Spoleto Festival (Falstaff), Chicago Lyric Opera (Simon Boccanegra), Cincinnati Opera, Atlanta Opera, Dayton Opera, Knoxville Opera Company as well as the opera companies of Washington and Montana. He has also led many symphony orchestras.
On Broadway, Salesky conducted the revival of Man of La Mancha, with Raúl Juliá, in 1992. As of 2005, he is Executive Director and Conductor of the Knoxville Opera Company.

Join us for an Energy and Environment Forum with Dr. Paul Ferraro of Johns Hopkins University.

Professor Ferraro will discuss what is known about the relationship between poverty alleviation and ecosystem change, and will present new results from a study that asks whether Indonesia's national anti-poverty program, which transfers cash to hundreds of thousands of poor households, reduced the deforestation of primary forests as a side benefit.
