Dogwood Arts: A Very Special Arts Festival

Category: Exhibitions, visual art and Kids, family

October 23, 8:00 am - 12:30 pm
West High School, 3300 Sutherland Ave

A Very Special Arts Festival is a one of a kind event that celebrates Knox County Students with diverse abilities and the various artistic skills they are learning in the classroom. The event is not a competition, but an opportunity for students with disabilities to share their talents, works of art, and accomplishments with the community. Through this event, we hope to encourage and stimulate feelings of self-worth within these students.

The event includes a wide variety of activities in music, dance, drama, and visual arts. Workshops of “make and take” arts and crafts, demonstrations, exhibits of art work, and performances by individuals with disabilities are all elements of the festival. Students will enjoy spending time with local mascot/character favorites, creating their own works of art, sidewalk chalk, bubbles, a DJ, and more!

Pinkerton, star of Frédéric Mitterand’s award-winning film version of the opera.

Student Dress Rehearsals are presented with projected English translations on a screen above the stage. All students, regardless of age, are admitted without charge. Student IDs will be required of those attending colleges/universities. Adults are only permitted to attend if they are accompanying/chaperoning specific students. Knoxville History Project: History of the Old City with Jack Neely

Category: Free event, History, heritage and Literature, spoken word, writing

5:30pm at Blühen Botanicals, 111 E Jackson Ave #103, Knoxville, TN 37915

Join Jack Neely with the Knoxville History Project for a talk and book signing to celebrate the release of his new book, Knoxville’s Old City: A Short History at one of Eat Jackson Avenue’s newest businesses, Blühen Botanicals.

Years in the making, Knoxville’s Old City: A Short History is actually Jack's longest book and is lushly illustrated with many archive photographs, vintage maps, and illustrations. Jack's talk will hit the high points of what's probably Knoxville's most complicated neighborhood, including the Bowery saloon district, Cripple Creek (later known as the Bottom), Irish Town, and the wholesale warehouse district, all overlaid by some ephemeral regions known as the Flag Pond and Gunter's Flats. More complicated than it seems, the Old City was once the part of town where you were most likely to hear Greek, Italian, and Yiddish in conversation, to see cowboys (and cattle) and occasionally a famous outlaw or two, and to witness blacks and whites together. And probably every tale you've ever heard about the Old City is at least partly true.

Free Program. Bar beverages available for purchase from Blühen Botanicals.
