Clayton Center for the Arts: National Geographic Live: On The Trail of Big Cats

Category: Exhibitions, visual art, Lecture, panel and Science, nature

The National Geographic Live Speaker Series brings premium storytelling and visually stunning imagery to the stage with first-hand accounts of science, adventure, and exploration told by our world-class explorers who inspire change in the world.

In National Geographic Live, On the Trail of Big Cats, we go around the world in search of big cats with award-winning photographer Steve Winter. Also a determined explorer, Winter will lead you from Asian jungles where resilient tiger populations persist, to the Himalaya, home of the rare snow leopard. Co-author of the National Geographic book Tigers Forever, Winter’s mission is to share the beauty of big cats while working to save them.

Winter’s dedication to the protection of these iconic animals has made him a cornerstone of the National Geographic Big Cats Initiative. This is a long-term commitment by the Society to stop poaching, preserve habitats, and support education to halt extinction. In 2013, National Geographic published Winter’s photography book Tigers Forever: Saving the World’s Most Endangered Cat. Winter has been named BBC Wildlife Photographer of the Year and BBC Wildlife Photojournalist of the Year. Additionally, he won first prize in the nature story category from World Press Photo in 2014 and 2008 (for the snow leopard photo that would become synonymous with Apple’s OS of the same name). He is also a two-time winner of Picture of the Year International’s Global Vision Award. He lectures globally on photography and conservation issues and has appeared on numerous global media outlets, including CBS Nightly News, 60 Minutes, NPR, BBC, and CNN.

East Tennessee Historical Society: Finding Schifrah: The Journey of a Dutch Holocaust Child Survivor

Category: Free event, History, heritage, Lecture, panel and Literature, spoken word, writing

In a Brown Bag Lecture on Tuesday, October 22, Sonja DuBois will discuss her book Finding Schifrah: The Journey of a Dutch Holocaust Child Survivor, her true story of being a hidden child of the Holocaust. Born 1940 in Rotterdam, Clara van Thijn was separated from her parents on July 29, 1942, when they reported for the first Jewish transport headed for Auschwitz and were murdered shortly after their arrival. Entrusted to a family friend, artist Dolf Henkes, and rescued by a Dutch Christian couple, she spent the postwar years in Schiedam as Sonja, the foster child of Willem and Elisabeth van der Kaden. When Sonja was 12, the family emigrated to the U.S. and she told the truth about her identity, however, she was forbidden to discuss it.

Sonja now lives in Knoxville and frequently shares her tragic, yet inspirational story with classrooms and groups across the state. She was featured in the Tennessee Holocaust Commission’s Living On exhibit and has donated artifacts to the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, DC, which has a recorded interview of her life. A book singing will follow the lecture.

The lecture is presented by the East Tennessee Historical Society and sponsored by the Gentry Griffey Funeral Chapel. The lecture and book signing are free and open to the public and will begin at noon, Tuesday, October 22, at the East Tennessee History Center, 601 S. Gay Street, Knoxville. Guests are invited to bring a "Brown Bag" lunch and enjoy the lecture. Soft drinks are available. For more information on the lecture, exhibitions, or museum hours, call 865-215-8824 or visit the website at www.EastTNHistory.org.
