The University of Tennessee Arboretum Society presents a “Moonlight Hike” on Saturday, October 15, from 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at the UT Arboretum, 901 S. Illinois Avenue in Oak Ridge. Please note that this event is limited to ages 10 and above.
Join the group as they walk Arboretum trails by the light of the silvery moon. The program will begin at the Visitors Center near the parking lot at 7:30 p.m. The two mile round trip hike will be led by experienced volunteers.

There will be a full moon on October 15. Moonrise will begin at 7:02 p.m. that evening, so the moon will have risen above the trees by the time the program has concluded.
Participants will listen for owls and other night creatures as they journey through the woods. There will be a telescope available for anyone who wants a closer look at the night sky. Maybe the “Man in the Moon” will be seen.

Light refreshments will be served. Bring a flashlight if desired. Wear sturdy shoes with good support as the trail surface can be uneven with roots and rocks. Long pants and bug repellent are also recommended.

A suggested $5 donation per car will help the Arboretum Society support the Arboretum.

The hike will be cancelled in the event of rain or very cloudy skies. Check our Facebook page for a cancellation notice, which will be posted by 5:30 p.m. Call the Arboretum office during regular hours at 483-3571 with questions.

EARTH AND SKY is a poetic thriller about a would-be poet and part-time librarian named Sara McKeon whose lover of ten weeks, David Ames, is found dead one hot August morning in the city of Chicago. It appears that David, owner and manager of an expensive art-deco restaurant, may have been involved in several illicit activities including kidnapping, rape and murder. Unable to believe that the man she gave her heart to was a killer, and outraged that the police seem to have closed the book on the case, Sara begins her own investigation of the crime and is led deeper and deeper through the urban labyrinth into the contemporary underworld.

As the detective story moves forward in time, scenes from the love affair take us back to the moment when Sara and David first met. Finally the plots converge, and Sara finds herself face to face with the person who murdered her beloved.

Winner of the L. Arnold Weissberger Playwriting Competition sponsored by New Dramatists, this play received its world premiere at Second Stage in New York City. This exciting thriller examines the seedy urban underworld where murder leads to an indistinct demarcation between law enforcement and law infringement.

In collaboration with the University of Tennessee College of Architecture and Design, October’s exhibition will be a presentation of video projects by Liam Young. Liam will be lecturing Monday, October 10, at 5:30PM in room 109, McCarty Auditorium of the Art and Architecture Building.

Liam Young is a speculative architect who, in his own words, “operates in the spaces between design, fiction and futures”. With his London-based design think tank, Tomorrow’s Thoughts Today, he explores the future implications of emerging urban developments. Named by Blueprint magazine as one of 25 people who will change architecture and design, Young uses fiction and film to discuss probable futures.

The District Gallery is pleased to present Mask by sculptor Nan Jacobsohn. In her second showing at the gallery, Jacobsohn evokes the primal in her latest collection of striking animal masks. Exploring sculpture in its most original form, Jacobsohn’s work gives way to endless possibilities, both tactile and sacred, ancient yet contemporary. The use of masks for ritual and ceremonial purposes has been a human practice since antiquity, intimately linked with animal iconography. From the ancient cave paintings in France to the monumental totem images of the Northwest, artists have attributed to their fellow creatures powers and qualities both natural and magical. “I consider them, perhaps, guardian spirits,” Jacobsohn says. Working in ceramic and mixed media, Jacobsohn expresses the distinctive features of each creature with textural and stylistic elements, and captures the essence of their spirit. “I love the fact that you connect directly with the clay with your hands, and it responds almost like a living thing,” says Jacobsohn. With their primal power incarnated in clay, her masks are brought alive.

Broadway Studios And Gallery presents Jan Lynch "A Retrospective" from in memorial of the 20th anniversary of his death. Jan Lynch, who died from AIDS in 1996, was a prolific photographer from the 1980's till the mid 1990's. He was raised and worked mostly in Knoxville.

Opening reception will be held on First Friday October 7th from 5-10pm. Light refreshments will be served. Parking is on premises.

Closing reception will be held Friday, October 28th from 5-9ish with a print sale and silent auction

His work has been seen worldwide through various means and publications that primarily feature LGBTQ communities and interests. Lynch has been compared to Robert Mapplethorpe who was another gay photographer from his era. But Lynch's work is Southern and Appalachian in nature which only Knoxville could provide. Much of his work is based on the sensuality of the male form in the outdoors in wide variety of locales around the Fort Sanders and UT area. He also made photographs that depicted demonstrations, the community at large and celebrities that were related to LGBTQ community.

This event is open to the general public yet a separate room will be designated for the "mature" work. This event is supported by many people including Ed White, official archivist, biographer, and close friend of Lynch and Tim Hinkle, owner of many original prints who has graciously allowed us to use. This exhibit is also sponsored by Hope Center which provides, at no charge, caring support and assistance to all individuals and families living with HIV. Donations will be taken at the door and select prints will be sold with all proceeds going to the Hope Center.
