McClung Museum: Knoxville Unearthed: Archaeology in the Heart of the Valley

In honor of Knoxville’s 225th anniversary, this exhibition explores the city’s heritage as seen through archaeological discoveries in the “Heart of the Valley.” Using historic artifacts unearthed in and around Knoxville, along with historical images, maps, documents, and oral histories, the exhibition tells the story of Knoxville’s development from a frontier settlement to an industrialized city.

Opening reception for members on Fri Sep 16, 5-7 PM.

Marble Springs State Historic Site is pleased to host a weekend of Living History in celebration of the life and times of the first governor of Tennessee, John Sevier, in commemoration of his 271st birthday.

John Sevier Days Living History Weekend will take place Saturday, September 17, from 10:00 AM– 5:00 PM and Sunday, September 18, from 11:00 – 4:00 PM. You can expect to enjoy 18th century demonstrations such as open-hearth cooking, spinning and weaving, blacksmithing, weapons demonstrations that will showcase period-appropriate firearms, 18th century style militia drills, regional craft demonstrations, historic lecture, hands on archeology activities, and more! Food, drinks, and special treats will be available. Details are subject to change.

Please join us with your family and friends and enjoy this early autumn event to kick off a memorable fall season at Marble Springs!

Admission for Sevier Days is $5.00 per adult (16+); $3 per child (7-15); 6 and under FREE; Parking is free. All proceeds benefit the mission of preservation and education of the Marble Springs State Historic Site.

Students use individual computers to explore Cyndis List. This site is a categorized and cross-referenced index to over 340,000 genealogical resources on the internet. All of the sites may be called up directly from Cyndis List. Participants should bring information on all research “brick walls” or stopping points.

10th Annual “Art In The Heart of Hamblen County”

Celebrating Visual & Performing Arts at Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Park, 350 West Ninth North Street, Morristown

International Award-Winning Cartoonist of the “Nancy” Comic Strip, Guy Gilchrist, Artist, Author, and Cartoonist, will headline Arts In The Park. At the age of 24, Guy Gilchrist was hand-selected by Jim Henson to create The Muppets Comic Strip that was ultimately printed worldwide daily in 660-plus newspapers from 1981 to 1986. Throughout the years, Gilchrist set his hand to such notable cartoons as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Looney Tunes, Tom & Jerry, Fraggle Rock and The Pink Panther as well as being instrumental in the creation of The Muppet Babies.

Aurora Harrison Bull, an oil painter and artist for over 40-plus years, and an instructor, from Maynardville, Tennessee, is the featured premiere Guest Artist. One look at Aurora's paintings and you'll know that she is a lover of nature and wildlife. Often inspired by her surroundings, Aurora's work can capture a perfect moment in time and place it on canvas for all to see. In 1968 she tried her hand at oils and it was love at first sight. Aurora likes the fact that she is able to capture a three-dimensional quality with oils.

In addition to the two featured artists, the one-day celebration of two-dimensional fine art, artistic photography, and sculpture; theater, music, and dance will be a day for Morristown Art Association Member artists and local artists to showcase, display, sell, and demonstrate their skills and talents. Local musicians, dancers, and actors/actresses will be featured on two stages. Groups to appear include Zuva Marimba Band, Old City Buskers, Y’uns Jug Band, Tommy White, Studio 180 Dance, Dale “Dancing Dragonfly” Woodruff, Ashlee Correll and Friends, and Jeremy Fritts. The music will include tunes from yesterday, jazz and blues, and innovative arrangements of familiar jazz, original and popular vocals; in addition to the classical, pop, and country.
The day will also feature Fine art, exciting live demonstrations, roving entertainers, food and fun, art demonstrations, “Try Your Hand At Art,” an art walk, sidewalk chalk art opportunities, and various children’s art activities will add to the festival’s appeal. The Art Walk door prize drawing will include an Aurora Harrison Bull Painting & Guy Gilchrist Books. Admission to Arts In The Park is FREE. Parking is limited; but a shuttle bus will be available from Rose Center to the park.

Knoxville Writers Guild: Lisa Soland Workshop

Award-winning author and playwright Lisa Soland will lead the workshop "Share Well & Sell" on Saturday, Sept. 17, from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Central United Methodist Church.

"This workshop is for writers who make presentations or talks of any kind to an invited audience," Soland said. "We'll work together to create a 20-second pitch or synopsis that authors can deliver with contagious enthusiasm. I want participants to learn to express the love of their craft."

Cost of the workshop is $40, with members receiving a 40 percent discount and student members a 50 percent discount. Participants are asked to bring their books or other writing they feel confident sharing to practice reading and pitching to possible customers.

Lisa Soland has more than 40 internationally published plays and four children's books. She has produced and/or directed over 80 productions and play readings, 55 of them original. Ms. Soland teaches privately, in the theatre department of Maryville College, and throughout the U.S. Soland is currently writing a one-man play on the life of World War I hero, Sgt. Alvin York, scheduled to open in the fall of 2017 at York's childhood home in Pall Mall, Tenn.

UT Arboretum Society: Fall Meet and Greet and Wildflower Walk

The UT Arboretum Society will host a fall Meet and Greet followed by a fall wildflower walk on the UT Arboretum grounds, September 17, 9:00-11:00 a.m.

The public is invited for a Meet and Greet at the UT Arboretum Visitor’s Center, 901 S. Illinois Avenue in Oak Ridge. Coffee and donuts will be served from 8:30 a.m. to 9:00 a.m.

Kris Light, an expert naturalist, educator and photographer will lead this fun, educational and easy walk. Participants may want to bring a camera to take pictures of the many wildflowers on the Arboretum grounds.

Describing the walk, Light said, “Most people think of springtime as wildflower season, but late summer and fall color the fields and roadsides in gold, purple and white. Come to the UT Arboretum to learn more about the wildflowers of the fields. “

University of Tennessee: Hispanic/Latino Art Exhibition

Curated by Argentinean artist Dina R. Ruta. The purpose of the exhibition is the integration of our Latin culture through the arts. The main objective is to show new Latino college students that our community has a space within the University for them and to show the possibility for cultures to coexist. Fountain City Art Center: Foothills Craft Guild Celebrates Its 50th Anniversary

Foothills Craft Guild members are celebrating their 50th Anniversary this year! Especially exciting is the fact that not just the younger and newer members but also many of the Guild's original founding members will be bringing in work for the displays. Most of the Foothills Exhibit's display pieces will be for sale which is excellent news for those who admire handmade one-of-a-kind works of art. Also on display will be some of the works from the Foothills Craft Guild's permanent collection! The Guild was founded in the 1966 in Oak Ridge and boasts some of the state of Tennessee's finest artisans as its members. The variety and quality in the exhibit will astound and delight everyone who views it. On display will be fiber arts including weaving, spinning, needle felting, knitting, and macrame. One can also expect to see handcrafted jewelry in metal, gemstones, and glass; pottery of every style and method imaginable, handmade books, print making, photography, basketry, wood, stone, and metal sculptures, quilting, brooms, cornshuck dolls, and mosaics.
